Burlövs kyrkby: history in the village setting
Burlövs kyrkby has roots dating back to the Viking Age. Despite the land consolidation of the early 19th century, a historic village centre was preserved there: the church, vicarage, school, poorhouse and bell-ringer’s house stand close together. The history of the place can therefore be read in an entire ensemble, not just in a single building.
The oldest surviving parts of Burlövs gamla kyrka date from the 12th century. The church is built in the Romanesque style and has sandstone walls about one metre thick. Its furnishings include an altarpiece from 1598, a pulpit from around the same period and a 12th-century baptismal font. The building’s design and furnishings reveal different historical layers within the same structure.
Next to the church stands the 45-metre-long residential wing of Burlövs gamla prästgård. It has stood here since 1773 and originally comprised 17 rooms and a cellar. Since 1964, the prästgård has been designated a listed building of national importance; today it is used as a local history museum.
Kronetorps mölla and the agricultural landscape
Kronetorps mölla was built in 1841 by Christian Bergh as a Dutch-style windmill on a part of Arlöv No. 7 that belonged to Kronetorp. At 27 metres tall, it is Skåne’s largest wind-powered mill and is of the Dutch windmill type. Together with the former miller’s house, it forms a well-preserved mill setting against the surrounding open farmland, characteristic of a grain-producing landscape.
The visiting days also offer an opportunity to explore the mill: Mölledagen traditionally takes place on the first Sunday in July. Guided tours are offered at the mill, and various associations also take part. The programme and access may vary from year to year, so check the dates for your visit. The Mölleföreningen serves coffee on visiting days. This is a seasonal offering, so it is worth checking availability in advance.
Another local celebration is the annual Burlövsfesten, featuring music, dancing, food and activities. Dates and programme vary each year. If you would like to plan your visit around an event, check the relevant dates and programme details.
Trails, wetlands and salt marshes
The Burlövs natur- och kulturstig trail runs through the agricultural landscape from Kronetorps mölla to the Sege å. Along the way, you can see historic cultural remains in the farmland as well as meadows, wetlands, ponds and small biotopes. Historical traces and different landscape features sit side by side, rather than the trail focusing on just one destination.
The coastal meadows of Tågarps hed shape a distinctive landscape. They have been grazed since the Bronze Age. Together with regular flooding by salty seawater, grazing has created a distinctive salt-marsh vegetation, home to a diverse range of plants and insects, some of them rare. Lommabukten and its coastal meadows, including Tågarps hed, are now a Natura 2000 site. A nature reserve has been established there to protect its sensitive natural environment and birdlife; observe seasonal access restrictions.
Bernstorps mosse is home to frogs, irises, the rare plant Lökgamander and numerous bird species, including the western marsh harrier, moorhen, cuckoo, nightingale and penduline tit. The wetland area can be accessed from the Hornbach car park. Check local parking conditions before setting off.
Culture in Åkarp and Arlöv
At Kulturhuset Möllegården in Åkarp, a library, exhibitions, a creative workshop, events and performances come together. A permanent exhibition about Charlotte Weibull features dolls, traditional costumes, eggs and textiles from her collection. The cultural centre is about a 10- to 15-minute walk from Åkarp station. Check the walking time before your visit.
Arlövs teater is used as a theatre, assembly venue and club premises; the Arlövsrevyn revue is performed there. Music events are occasionally held at the open-air stage in summer. Event dates vary, so it is worth checking the programme if you would like to plan your visit around one.
