Explore Skurup’s town centre through its brick architecture and urban layout. Skurupsgotik, an architectural style using red brick, still shapes the centre today. Numerous buildings made of machine-made red brick, along with an altered grid layout, give the townscape further definition. Another period is reflected in Skurup’s railway station settlement: it is of national interest for cultural heritage conservation and represents the station communities of Skåne around the turn of the 20th century. The townscape thus brings together an architectural style that remains influential today and a historic settlement form.

Architecture from the church to the town centre

Skurup Church was originally built around the year 1200 in the form of a Romanesque basilica. There are paintings in the choir and apse. The Romanesque basilica form draws attention to the original architecture, while the paintings further direct the eye to specific parts of the church. The church thus adds a distinct architectural theme to the brick character of the town centre.

Hilltop, birdlife and illuminated routes

The Zimmermans backe nature reserve lies on a high hill at the northern edge of Skurup. Its summit is about 25 metres above the town and offers views of the surrounding area. Here, the focus is on the views rather than the built environment. The Bräknehus area has a variety of trees that support a rich birdlife. An illuminated loop around Bräknehus and Zimmermans backe, mostly on gravel, is 2.5 kilometres long. The views, birdlife and route show different aspects of the northern natural landscape.

For a direct comparison of routes, there is also the route around Lake Prästamossen in the southeast of Skurup. It is 1.2 kilometres long, illuminated and paved, and intended for pedestrians and cyclists. Compared with the 2.5-kilometre loop around Bräknehus and Zimmermans backe, which is mostly on gravel, it is shorter and has a different surface. Both routes are illuminated. Their length, surface and location help you compare the options objectively when deciding whether to include a loop in your travel plans.

Garden and municipal landscape

Skurup City Park offers a different setting from the hills and trails. It was laid out in 1927, mainly following a Danish garden concept; rhododendrons and old, mature trees grow there. The history of garden design is brought together with specific plantings.

Looking at the wider Municipality of Skurup adds a landscape perspective to the history of the town centre. From south to north, the municipality includes parts of Söderslätt, the rolling landscape of southern Skåne and the southern slope of Romeleåsen. This sequence places Skurup in three named landscape areas and makes the difference between the townscape and the municipal area tangible.

Places and services in the municipality

Public places used in everyday life are also useful for getting oriented: the Municipality of Skurup has four libraries, in Skurup, Abbekås, Rydsgård and Skivarp. You can borrow books, magazines and films there, as well as use rooms for reading, studying or using a computer. The four locations show how municipal services are spread across several of the places mentioned. These facilities add an everyday perspective to the picture of Skurup.
