Discover Stenberga through its swimming spots, cultural and historical sites, and a specific walking route. Saljen beach is defined by a shoreline about 50 metres long and relatively shallow water; at another swimming spot in the area, swimming is also possible in winter. Other highlights include Stenberga kyrka, one of Sweden’s few surviving medieval wooden churches, Högarps by and a trail to Klinta Martas Grotta. You can tailor your visit to focus on swimming, cultural heritage or the landscape, depending on your interests.
Two different ways to swim
Saljen beach is on Lake Saljen, outside the village of Stenberga in Vetlanda Municipality. Its shoreline is about 50 metres long, the water is relatively shallow, and the bottom is sandy and clayey. These features give the swimming spot its distinctive character.
Saljenbadet near Bodaryd is in the area around Stenberga, in the parish of Stenberga. Swimming is possible there year-round, including in winter, although conditions may vary by season. There is a clear difference to consider when choosing between the two swimming spots: Saljen is characterised by its shoreline length, water depth and bottom; Saljenbadet stands out because winter swimming is possible. Check conditions for the season you plan to visit, especially if you want to swim there in winter.
Wooden church, trail and farm landscape
Stenberga kyrka is one of Sweden’s few surviving medieval wooden churches. Its status gives the area a distinctive cultural and historical focus on medieval timber-building heritage.
A 2 km trail leads from the church car park through Småland pastureland to Klinta Martas Grotta, at the foot of Klintaberget. The terrain is difficult near the escarpment. The trail’s length alone therefore does not describe what it is like; take this section into account when planning your day.
The Högarps by cultural reserve is in the parish of Stenberga, near the village. Five farms stand along a village street, with adjoining pasture and arable land. While the trail to the grotto leads to a specific destination, Högarps by presents a farm landscape with a street and cultivated land. The two places thus offer different perspectives on the landscape and its history.
Local history and events
The grave monument of the poet Pälle Näver is located in Stenberga cemetery and is of regional historical interest. It adds a specific grave monument and a connection to an individual to the area’s cultural and historical themes.
Since 2006, an open-air play by Stenberga-Spelen, with a local theme, has been performed at Stenberga hembygdsgĂĄrd fifteen times around midsummer. The performances have preserved local cultural heritage and shared it with thousands of visitors. Stenberga-Spelen thus brings together midsummer performances and a play with a local theme.
Stenberga byalag regularly organises talks, café evenings, quiz nights, fishing competitions and village walks; dates may change. If you want one of these activities to be a highlight of your stay, check the date in advance.
