Näshult offers a range of cultural and historical perspectives, from the wooden church on a hill overlooking Prästsjön and the former shop Gamla Affär'n to its mining history. Nearby Höghult Nature Reserve adds ancient forest, rocky outcrops and a body of water to the mix. Swimming at Serarpsjön and fishing in named waters are also possible topics. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up whether architecture and local history or nature and water-based experiences should take centre stage.
Wooden Church by Prästsjön
Näshults kyrka is a well-preserved and notable example of a wooden church built in Småland in the 18th century. It is one of three surviving examples of this unusual type of wooden church in Småland. Located on a hill overlooking Prästsjön, the building has a striking connection to the landscape. The approximately 500-year-old winged altarpiece adds to the building’s history as an older furnishing.
To reach the church, take Route 125 and then head east along Kyrkvägen. It is on the left, 800 metres after the turn-off.
Shop Life and Mining History
Gamla Affär'n was Per Claeson's country shop in Näshult. It operated from around 1910 until it closed on 2 December 1969. Today, Claesons affär is a museum. The old meat counter, cash register and scales have been preserved. If you would like to visit the museum, check access arrangements beforehand.
Another trace of the past is Bockahålet, a cave in a rock crevice. It was mentioned as early as the 17th century in an inventory of antiquities. Here, a distinctive geological feature meets an early written reference—an approach to local history distinct from the church and the shop.
In 1544, King Gustav Vasa took an interest in newly discovered deposits at Silverberget in Näshult. An investigation of Silvergruvan found that the silver deposit was very small. Follow the signs from Route 125 to Silvergruvan. Route 125 serves as a reference point for both destinations.
Nature, Swimming and Fishing
Nearby Höghult Nature Reserve has a distinctly wild character, with ancient forest, rocky outcrops and a body of water defining the area. There are no recreational facilities, and the terrain is hilly and dotted with numerous boulders. A visit is shaped by the conditions of nature.
Serarpabadet is a swimming spot on Serarpsjön in Näshult parish. As facilities at the swimming spot may change, check the latest information before your visit.
The Grytesjöns Fiskevårdsområde fishing area includes Grytesjön and sections of the Gårdvedaån both upstream and downstream of the lake. If you plan to fish there, check the applicable rules and permits beforehand.
