Vetlanda brings together a river landscape, trails around the central town and a broad range of cultural and historical themes. Illharjen is a densely vegetated delta on the Emån; around 60 different bird species nest there each year. If you’re looking for hotels in Vetlanda, you can choose the focus of your trip: nature, outdoor activities or culture.

River Landscape and Trails

The Illharjenrundan passes a Bronze Age burial ground. The hiking trail is easy to access and just over a kilometre from the centre of Vetlanda. Illharjen itself offers a connection with nature, reflected in the bird species that nest there each year. Here, landscape and wildlife come together, without the nature experience being limited to a single attraction.

The Vetlandarundan is a 27-kilometre hiking trail around the central town of Vetlanda. The Planetrundan offers a different perspective: this cycling and walking route leads from the Solen sculpture in the centre to the Östanå outdoor recreation area, where Neptunus is located. During the season, new courses are set up as part of Veckans bana, including around the central town. In the summer months, new courses are available every week; anyone who wants to get out and about in the countryside can try them.

Activities by the Emån and Lake Grumlan

Vetlanda Golfklubb also offers two different course formats. Its 18-hole course is set amid the natural scenery of Småland, by the Emån and Lake Grumlan. There is also a 9-hole pay-and-play course, open to everyone, including those without a golf handicap certificate. The course size and access without a handicap certificate are two practical points to consider when deciding which of these golfing options suits your plans.

Museums and Insights into Everyday Life

The Vetlanda Museum is housed in a courthouse dating from 1938. Its subjects include contemporary Swedish art, archival material, photographs and cultural-historical objects connected to Vetlanda. There is also a creative workshop for all ages. The museum therefore offers both art and local history, as well as opportunities to get creative yourself.

At the Vetlanda School Museum, objects, furniture and school materials from older schools in the surrounding area offer a glimpse into school life in the past. The Njudungs Hembygdsmuseum at Forngården takes a different approach, with well-preserved houses and their contents. The Storstugan there is 250 years old. Together, the two museums offer different ways to explore history: one through schools and their objects, the other through houses and their furnishings.

Runestones, Architecture and Local History

There are two diabase runestones in Vetlanda Church. Another stands in Apoteksparken: Arinmund had it erected in memory of his father Hära and his brothers Torbjörn and Näve. The stone preserves not only an inscription, but also a specific remembrance of the family members named.

The Vetlanda Historical Walk spans the town’s history from the medieval village community to the modern trading town. The digital architecture walks explore architectural history and period-specific building details; the first focuses on the old Stationsgatan. The Uppståndelsekapellet, the chapel crematorium in Vetlanda, offers another historical perspective: it dates from 1935 and was the first crematorium built in Jönköping County. These themes can be explored individually and offer different perspectives on the town’s history.
