Skirö offers a variety of ways to shape your stay: a neoclassical church with a medieval history, the Sundsängen nature reserve on a peninsula in Lake Skirösjön, and trails by the lake. There is also a ceramics studio, local food and seasonal offerings. You can tailor your trip to your own interests—with culture, nature or both.
Church and History in Skirö
Skirö Church was completed in 1837, replacing a smaller medieval church. It stands on a hill and offers views across the lake and surrounding area. The neoclassical church ensemble is consistently designed and exceptionally well preserved. Its history can also be traced through the remains of its predecessor: foundations and a freestanding bell tower mark the site of the former church. The tower was built in 1951. The medieval history, the 19th-century church and a later marker of the former site therefore form a clear chronological sequence.
Sundsängen and Lakeside Trails
The Sundsängen nature reserve is an old pasture on a peninsula that extends into Lake Skirösjön. To reach the area, park at Skirö Church and then walk about 700 metres. The church also serves as a landmark for this walk. Another way to experience the waterside landscape is the Smålandsleden, which runs along the lake in Skirö. The trails and the nature reserve offer different highlights; Skirö also has an unusually diverse flora, including numerous rare species.
Ceramics, Farm Life and Regional Cuisine
Ateljé Tolja is a ceramics studio, gallery and creative meeting place in Skirö. Wallby Säteri is situated on the shore of Lake Skirösjön. There, rustic dishes are prepared using traditional recipes and ingredients from the forest, lake and cultivated land. This connects the culinary side of the area with the landscapes that define Skirö, without reducing culture and nature to a single experience.
Loaklev Lustgård also offers a different perspective on the area. From there, you can enjoy views over the forest and cultural landscape. The grounds include beekeeping as well as horses, rabbits, dwarf goats and chickens. Those interested in rural life will find different things here than at the church or ceramics studio. In autumn, when the apples are ripe, the cider press is open: you can have your own apples pressed into juice and pasteurised. This offering depends on the season and the ripe apples.
More Trails and a Swimming Spot Nearby
The “Småland in i evigheten” route reaches Skirö after several Swedish miles. A short gravel-road detour leads to Wallby Säteri. Separately, the Smålandsleden runs along the lake in Skirö; these route descriptions therefore refer to different ways of exploring the area. Near Skirö, at Karintorp in Skirö parish on Lake Övrasjön, there is also a popular public swimming spot in a scenic setting. It adds another connection with nature without being confused with Lake Skirösjön or the trails in Skirö.
