Jättendal offers three distinct ways to plan your trip: archaeological remains, Kustvägen as a scenic route, and coastal history. Kungshögen and the rune stones provide tangible traces of the past. Kustvägen starts in Jättendal and passes through forest and agricultural landscapes near the sea; the nearby Nordanstig Coastal Museum adds insight into fishing and traditional crafts. Consider which focus best matches your trip: history at specific sites, scenery along a route, or the themes of coastal culture.

Kustvägen and its scenery

Kustvägen passes through places including Mellanfjärden and Hårte. The route is characterised above all by forest and agricultural landscapes near the sea. This makes the route-focused perspective different from the archaeological sites: the emphasis is on a stretch with several named places and a recurring landscape, rather than a single monument. If scenery is important to your travel plans, you can make Kustvägen a focus in its own right.

Mellanfjärden is on the route; the Sjömärket restaurant there specialises in fish. As restaurant offerings and opening arrangements may change, check before visiting.

Burial mounds and rune stones

Kungshögen in Jättendal consists of two burial mounds from the Iron Age, probably built between 350 and 550 AD. The mounds are located just above Jättendals Hembygdsgård, the local heritage centre. This location gives the archaeological site a clear geographical connection to Jättendal. The dating should be understood as a probable period, not a specific year.

A rune stone marked with a cross stands in front of the entrance to Jättendal Church. A rune stone dating from the 11th century, made by a woman, stands in the cemetery in Jättendal. The two rune stones have different points of interest: the cross marking is noteworthy at the church, while the cemetery stone is distinguished by its date and maker. The cemetery stone is considerably later than the burial mounds, so the sites mentioned here provide a view of remains from different periods.

Coastal fishing and traditional crafts

The Nordanstig Coastal Museum, near Jättendal, provides information about coastal fishing, particularly herring fishing. It also showcases traditional crafts: boatbuilding, rope-making, coopering and boat engine manufacturing. The subject matter thus covers both fishing and several different crafts. If you are especially interested in fishing, herring is a specific focus; the crafts listed offer a starting point for exploring traditional trades. The museum therefore offers a different historical perspective from the individual archaeological remains: the focus here is on coastal work and craft traditions. Plan your museum visit around the season and check the latest visitor information in advance. Coopering is the craft of making barrels.
