The three-kilometre Bergsjö runt walking trail passes through Bergsjö. At Bålleberget, by contrast, the focus is on old coniferous forest, views of Bergsjö and Lake Storsjön, and a strenuous climb. The church and Hembygdsgård add art, architectural history and a biographical connection to the natural attractions.

On Foot, on the Slope and by the Water

The Bergsjö runt trail is three kilometres long. As a walking trail through the town, it offers a clearly defined distance for a leg of your walk. Old coniferous forest of spruce and pine grows on the eastern and southern slopes of Bålleberget. The upper parts of the steep slopes offer views of Bergsjö and Lake Storsjön. The climb includes several steep sections and requires some effort. So, when planning your time outdoors, you can choose between a walk through the town and a strenuous climb; at Bålleberget, the slope and physical effort are just as much a consideration as the view.

Bergsjö Fiskevårdsområde has fishing waters that include lakes and streams. This adds fishing as a distinct nature activity alongside trails and views. For planning what interests you, it offers a different kind of outdoor experience from a walk or climb: the focus is on the water rather than the trail route and views.

Art and Architectural History

The chancel wall of Bergsjö kyrka is adorned with paintings by artist Albert Blombergsson, dating from 1845 to 1856. The specific reference to the chancel wall and this period makes the art a distinct cultural history topic, separate from the architectural history of the historic farms.

Bergsjö Hembygdsgård is located at the local heritage park in the centre of Bergsjö. Östigården, at Hembygdsgård, is a family farm dating from the 17th century that acquired its present appearance in the early 19th century. This distinction matters to its architectural history: the farm dates back to the 17th century, but it was only later that it took on its present appearance. Öststugan, the birthplace of Jon-Erik Öst, is also located at Hembygdsgård. These are two distinct points of cultural history: the development of a family farm and the connection to Jon-Erik Öst’s birthplace. The farm’s history goes further back in time than the chancel wall paintings.

Key Places in Bergsjö

There are several specific landmarks to help you find your way around the centre. Bergsjöparken is at Stationsvägen 10B, above the bus station and sports ground. Bergsjö bio is in the centre at Södra vägen 4. The library in Bergsjö is the main library for Nordanstig Municipality. The places mentioned therefore have different functions: in addition to a park and a cinema, the library serves the whole municipality.
