In Harmånger, the medieval Kastalen and Harmångers kyrka stand side by side. The church was probably built at the end of the 12th century or the beginning of the 13th century. There are also historic buildings at Harmångers Hembygdsgård, an open agricultural landscape and the River Harmångersån. This gives you a range of ways to explore the area on your trip: church and local history, water activities and scenery.

A Church and Buildings with a History

The Kastalen is a medieval tower next to the church. Two bells hang inside; both were cast by Andreas Höök in 1665. They are believed to be the oldest bells still in use in Hälsingland. The history of the church’s construction and that of the bells thus goes back to different centuries.

Harmångers Hembygdsgård is also home to Harmånger’s old church school, built in 1866. Many of its furnishings have been preserved and supplemented. The Hembygdsgård also has an old vicarage from the 18th century, which has largely been preserved in its original condition. The Hembygdsgård is in Harmånger, on Karlsberg, fairly centrally located. The school, vicarage and church offer different insights into local building and everyday history.

Harmångersån: Scenery and Paddling

In the Harmångersbygden, Harmångersån flows through open agricultural countryside. Grayling and crayfish live in the river; sea trout are considered particularly worthy of protection. Historically, Harmångersån was also an important salmon river. This brings together a scenic and a historical perspective along the same river.

You can canoe and fish on Harmångersån near Harmånger. For paddlers, the section of the Nordanstigs Kanotled from Harmånger to Kustleden is also of interest: it is considered scenic, has fast-flowing stretches, and requires at least four hours of planning. The duration and changing currents make this section an outing in its own right, rather than just a short stop between other activities.

Sindra: Lake Views and a Summer Event

At Sindra, a weir and a bridge lead to a picturesque area on the east shore of Storsjön. From there, you can see across the entire lake. An easy-to-walk path is suitable for a family outing; local trail conditions may change. Unlike the longer canoe trip, this is a walk with views across the lake.

The Church of Sweden holds an outdoor service in Sindra every summer. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates for your chosen year. This lets you plan the service as a specific occasion rather than assume there will be a suitable date.

Café and Practical Planning

In Harmånger, Kalahari has a café serving drinks, sandwiches, sweet pastries, small baked goods and ice cream. There is also a crafts section with handicrafts and items made from reused materials for sale. So the venue offers both a place to stop for refreshments and a selection of items to buy. If you are planning a specific visit, it is worth checking the current opening hours.

Bus services run from Harmånger to Bergsjö, Gnarp, Jättendal, Stocka, Strömsbruk and Hudiksvall. As services and timetables may change, check the connection for your travel day. These destinations offer several directions to choose from when planning; make your final choice based on the current timetable.
