Exploring Gävleborg means encountering a range of landscapes, from wilderness, mountains, archipelagos and deep forests to the region’s cultural heritage. The Hälsingegårdar farmhouses offer a particularly vivid glimpse of the region’s cultural side: many well-preserved homes have richly decorated rooms with wall paintings and wallpaper.

Hälsingegårdar and Building Traditions

The Decorated Farmhouses of Hälsingland were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012, becoming Sweden’s 15th World Heritage Site. Seven Hälsingegårdar were selected to represent the region’s building traditions. Their decorated interiors offer a tangible insight into the architectural character for which these farmsteads are known.

Visitor access is also worth planning: all seven selected farmsteads except Fågelsjö gammelgård can be visited to varying extents. The World Heritage Site also includes four visitor centres. Visitor arrangements may vary, so check in advance what applies to your visit.

Museums, Coastal Culture and History

The Järnvägsmuseet in Gävle is Sweden’s national museum of railway history and heritage. Its collection includes Prins August, considered the world’s oldest operational steam locomotive. Länsmuseet Gävleborg focuses on Gästrikland and Hälsingland, with exhibitions spanning prehistory to the present day. Various events and digital tours complement the offer; the programme may change.

A very different cultural landmark is the Gävle Goat, a Swedish Christmas straw goat that is 13 metres high and seven metres long. It is erected in central Gävle from the first Sunday of Advent until after New Year’s Day; the exact period may vary from year to year. Along the coast, fishing villages, lighthouses and small chapels are part of the region’s cultural landscapes.

Axmar Bruk was designated a cultural reserve in 2011. The area is also home to Axmar Nature Reserve, which covers about 4,500 hectares and is the largest nature reserve in Gävleborg. Hiking, birdwatching and barbecuing are possible there, and Axmar Bruk Cultural Reserve can also be visited.

Forests, Water and Trails

Hamra National Park preserves untouched forests, wetlands and naturally flowing waterways. Trails wind through ancient forests and bog landscapes. Hikes therefore take in a variety of landscape types; trail conditions may vary by season.

Activities in Färnebofjärden National Park include nature watching, canoeing and recreational fishing. All entrances are designed to be accessible, and the surfaces in the entrance areas are paved. As this information relates to accessibility, check it before your trip. Naturum Färnebofjärden in Gysinge offers exhibitions and activities about the nearby natural landscape and national park, as well as maps and hiking tips. Gysinge is also a good starting point for hikes and other activities in the national park.

Trails and routes offer a variety of experiences, too. Stage 13 of the Gästrikeleden runs along the Dalälven and partly over wooden boardwalks; water levels and weather can affect trail conditions. A coastal route passes through varied natural environments and offers views of historic buildings, beaches and viewpoints. Gästrikland has mountain bike trails of varying difficulty, as well as signposted cycling routes on gravel roads for rides between different destinations. Check signage and local conditions.

Högbo Bruk is a living historic ironworks area with origins in the 1630s. Guided tours share the history, buildings and events of the area; check availability in advance. The offer also includes trails and tracks for hiking, paddling, cycling and skiing, although outdoor activities may vary depending on the season and conditions. Kungsberget offers downhill skiing on 25 pistes served by 16 lifts; check the current configuration before your trip.
