When planning a stay in Hamrånge, it is worth exploring its different highlights: Hamrångebygden lies on the Jungfrukusten between Gävle and Söderhamn and brings together open cultural landscapes, forests, lakes and archipelago scenery. Buildings and trails offer different ways to explore the region—through architectural history, hiking routes and paddling.
Architectural history and cultural reserve
Hamrånge Church was built between 1847 and 1851 using stones from the medieval church. The 19th-century building therefore combines older building materials with a later period of construction. The Kastale offers a glimpse into an even earlier historical period: it was built in the 12th century as a defensive structure.
Axmar bruk has been Gävleborg’s only cultural reserve since 2011. The English Park at Axmar bruk dates from the 1860s. Walking paths wind through an English-inspired park, the forest and along the boat harbour. Here, cultural history and landscape can be explored together on a walk: the park is part of a route that also takes in the forest and harbour’s edge.
Hiking trails by length and character
Stora bruksrundan is a 4 km hiking trail around Axmar bruk Cultural Reserve and along the Stig till vrak trail. Kristinastigen is a marked section of Helgonleden, about 5 km long, through farmland and forest landscapes with several archaeological remains. Kyrkstigen is 9.3 km long and runs through the forest; people from Axmar used it in the past on their way to church.
In terms of length, Stora bruksrundan is the shortest of the three routes, while Kyrkstigen is the longest; Kristinastigen falls in between at about 5 km. The trails also differ in what they offer: Stora bruksrundan loops around the cultural reserve, Kristinastigen crosses open farmland and forest landscapes with traces of archaeological remains, and Kyrkstigen is defined by the forest and its former use as a church path. These differences can help you choose, without suggesting that the trails form a single route.
Archipelago scenery, paddling and getting there
Axmar bruk has three paddling routes through an almost untouched archipelago: Inomskärsturen, Kusö Kalvturen and Kusön övernattningstur. Alongside the hiking trails, these offer a way to experience the region from the water. The archipelago is both part of the region’s landscape and the shared setting for all three routes.
Hamrångebygden can be reached via the E4 exits at Hagsta or Axmartavlan. These two access points provide clear guidance for planning your journey. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can use your planned activities as a starting point: cultural history around Axmar bruk, one of the hiking trails of different lengths, or paddling in the archipelago each offer a different focus for your stay.
