Gävle offers different ways to explore history and culture: a church with a history at its current site dating back to the Middle Ages, museums with clearly distinct themes, music and events, as well as parks and hiking trails. When planning your visit, you can choose according to your interests—between urban history, exhibitions and outdoor activities.

Church History and City Walks

There has been a church on the site of today’s Heliga Trefaldighetskyrkan since the Middle Ages. The present church was brought into use in 1654. These two dates refer to different things: the medieval history relates to the church site, while 1654 is the year the present church was brought into use.

On Stadsvandringar, visitors can join guided city walks or explore Gävle independently using a map and a specially designed route. The focus is on the city’s history, architecture and hidden places. The walks thus offer a choice between a guided and an independent exploration, while sharing a common thematic focus.

Museums with Different Areas of Focus

Länsmuseet Gävleborg presents exhibitions about Gästrikland and Hälsingland, spanning from prehistoric times to the present day. It also has an extensive art collection dating from the 17th century to the present. This places regional history across a long period alongside art from several centuries, offering two distinct perspectives.

Järnvägsmuseet focuses on Sweden’s railways, the people of the railways and their future. The museum has more than 300 railway vehicles. Its focus is therefore clearly different from Länsmuseet’s regional and artistic emphasis: here, it is about railways and the people connected with them; there, about the regions of Gästrikland and Hälsingland, as well as art.

Sveriges Fängelsemuseum presents exhibitions in two old prisons. In Slottshäktet, the exhibition “Androm till skräck och varnagel” covers the period when people in Sweden were convicted of witchcraft, sodomy and crimes committed out of necessity. This specific historical focus makes the exhibition another distinct way to explore history.

Music, Stage and Recurring Traditions

The Gävlebocken tradition began in 1966 with the idea of putting up a giant straw goat on Slottstorget. The ten-metre-tall Gävlebocken adorns the square every year from the first Sunday of Advent. The tradition thus has both a clearly stated origin and a recurring place in the annual calendar.

Gävle Konserthus hosts a wide range of musical experiences. The programme ranges from Mongolian throat singers to the Gävle Symphony Orchestra, choral music and rock bands. For other kinds of stage events, Krusenstjernasalen at Agnes Kulturhus is a venue for theatre performances, talks, dance events and other large-scale events.

Bio 7:an is a small cinema showing films from around the world, in all genres and for all age groups. Cinema, concerts and stage events thus represent different forms of cultural programming: film, music and a variety of live performances.

Parks and Trails

Together with Stadsträdgården, Boulognerskogen forms one of Sweden’s largest city parks. The two park names here refer to a single park area. As a contrast to museums and event venues, this part of Gävle’s offerings showcases its urban green spaces.

Norrlandets kustled is a hiking trail approximately 15 kilometres long, running between Engeltofta and Marskärsudden. The approximate length and the two endpoints help identify this trail as a hiking option in its own right. This distinguishes it from Stadsvandringar, which focus on Gävle’s history, architecture and hidden places.

The “Inte nudda marken” play area is suitable for children. There are picnic and barbecue areas along the trail. So, alongside the cultural attractions, the options described in Gävle also include a play area specifically for children.
