Axmar combines a cultural reserve with an expansive archipelago landscape and an unusual underwater world. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Axmar, it helps to start planning by deciding what matters most to you: history and events, trails through nature, or activities on and under the water. The different options also vary in how much time they take.

Cultural history around Axmar bruk

The Axmar bruk Cultural Reserve was established in 2011. It includes the sea, the harbour, the Hyttan and the English Park. The reserve therefore encompasses both landscapes and places where the history of Axmar bruk can be seen. The present-day Hyttan was built in 1861; iron production there ceased in 1927. These dates provide a concrete timeframe for the industrial history.

The 1860s-era Hyttan is a monument in the cultural reserve and serves as a venue for concerts, theatre, exhibitions and other activities. If you are interested in the cultural programme, you can consider this use alongside the building’s historical significance. The types of events mentioned offer different ways to engage with this part of the cultural reserve.

Archipelago, habitats and shipwrecks

The Axmar Nature Reserve is the largest continuous archipelago area on the southern coast of the Gulf of Bothnia and covers approximately 4,500 hectares. The shallow bays and lagoons in the archipelago provide diverse underwater habitats for animals and plants. The landscape can therefore be described not only in terms of its islands: the habitats beneath the water’s surface are also part of its character.

There are around 20 shipwrecks in the waters around Axmar bruk. Most are shallow enough to be seen from the surface. Paddling, snorkelling or scuba diving are options for a round trip in Axmar Blue Park. If you are planning such a trip, check locally in advance for conditions and providers.

Trails on foot, by bike and by kayak

The “från stig till vrak” (from trail to wreck) hiking trail starts at Axmar bruk and runs north for one kilometre along the mainland coast. The route offers a short hiking option with a clearly indicated direction. Check the current trail conditions before setting off. On Kusön, there is also an approximately three-kilometre forest trail between Badviken and Korshamn. Important for your planning: the hiking trails on Kusön are currently uncleared and cannot be hiked at this time. Check the situation again immediately before your trip.

There are four cycling routes at Axmar bruk. They lead, among other places, to Gåsholma Fiskeläge and Gnagmurs Nature Reserve, as well as through forests, along the coast and by the sea. These routes offer a different way to experience the landscape than the hiking trails; conditions may change, so it is advisable to check for updates before setting off.

The three kayak routes also differ mainly in how much time they take: options include a shorter trip of a few hours, a day trip and an overnight trip. This makes it easy to choose a paddling option based on whether you want a shorter outing or to set aside a larger block of time. Together with the hiking and cycling routes, they provide a range of activities, each highlighting different aspects of the natural and cultural heritage.
