Old Gefle is a historic district with cobblestone streets and wooden houses. At Axmar Bruk, ruins, shipwrecks and foundation stones recall the history of the ironworks. These two perspectives alone show how differently Gävle can be explored: through its urban history and industrial past, but also through coastal traditions, railways and trails across varied natural landscapes.

Railway History: Vehicles, People and the Future

The Fordonsmagasinet Tåghallen is part of the Järnvägsmuseet and houses one of the world’s largest collections of railway vehicles. The Järnvägsmuseet’s exhibitions explore Sweden’s railways, the people who worked on them and the future of railways. This brings two perspectives together: at Tåghallen, the vehicles shape the experience, while the exhibitions broaden the view to include people and development.

In summer, a historic railbus operated by the Järnvägsmuseet connects Tåghallen with the museum. It also stops at Gävle Central on the outward and return journeys. The service is seasonal; if you plan to take it, check the timetable in advance.

Coastal Traditions and Traces of Industry

Bönan has been a fishing village since the 17th century, and its coastal traditions continue to this day. The small Bönan fyrmuseum is dedicated to the area’s maritime history. As visiting hours may change, it is advisable to check them before your visit. Limön is a summer island in the Gävle archipelago and has been a popular destination for excursions since the 19th century. Limö fyr dates from 1902 and served as a lighthouse, school and teacher’s residence—a building with several chapters in local history.

Axmar Nature Reserve is the largest continuous archipelago area along the southern coast of the Gulf of Bothnia. At around 4,500 hectares, it is also the largest in Gävleborg County. At Axmar Bruk, ruins, shipwrecks and foundation stones keep the history of the ironworks present. Five hiking trails explore the area, including an accessible loop around the cultural reserve and the English Park. Markets are held on Saturdays during the high season; the offerings also include high-quality food-craft stalls. Check the dates and current market offerings in advance.

Trails Through Varied Landscapes

The Norrlandets kustled is about 15 kilometres long and runs between Engeltofta and Marskärsudden. You can walk the entire route or individual sections. Along the way, manor houses, holiday homes, deep forests and buildings of cultural and historical interest alternate. Thirteen information boards provide details about the route, barbecue areas and bathing spots, as well as the locations of toilets available in summer. The boards can also help you plan practical stops along the way; check the current trail conditions in advance.

Hemlingby Recreation Area is Gävle’s largest recreation area. It lies within a large nature reserve just over three kilometres south of the city centre. Exercise trails and a nature trail wind through deep forests, herb meadows and open landscapes. Hemlingbybacken includes a snow park as well as exercise and cross-country ski trails of various lengths for winter recreation. The options therefore vary depending on what you are looking for: the nature trail passes through diverse landscapes, while the snow park and ski trails add to the winter activities. Operations may vary by season; check the latest information in advance.

On the Water and in Historic Places

You can travel along the Gavleån from Forsbacka to Alderholmen by canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard; shorter sections are also possible. The paddling route connects the urban area with quieter natural surroundings in the Testeboån Delta Nature Reserve. For planning purposes, choosing between the full route and a shorter section is a practical distinction. Forsbacka Bruk offers another perspective on history: it is one of Sweden’s best-preserved ironworks villages. Visitors can see buildings from the ironworks’ heyday and a house from the 1920s, as well as join guided tours. Tour dates may change. Visitors can also rent canoes at Forsbacka Bruk and paddle on Lake Storsjön; check canoe rental availability in advance.

Furuvik combines animal encounters, an amusement park and a water park. The water park includes a large pool, a children’s pool, two fast water slides and an adventure tower. At Furuvik, visitors can see animals up close, and animal presentations take place several times a day. As seasonal operations and programmes may change, check the latest information before your visit. The different themes are easy to distinguish: railway collections and historic places tell stories of the past and change, while coastal trails, natural landscapes and water activities turn the focus to scenery and movement.
