Six kilometres of coastline, an award-winning coastal trail and an estuary make Moncófar a destination with many different facets. By the sea, beaches with their own distinctive features sit alongside protected natural areas; there are also traces of fishing, agriculture and local food culture. You can tailor your trip to the themes that interest you most.

Coast and Nature Along the Belcaire

The coastline includes the beaches of Pedraroja, Grau, Masbo, Belcaire, Beniesma and Estanyol. At the mouth of the Belcaire River, an estuary forms amid native vegetation. There are opportunities for birdwatching and picnic areas; the area is also a habitat for the protected European pond turtle. However, sightings of animals cannot be guaranteed.

The beaches differ in the facilities and landscapes they offer. Playa del Belcaire is a 500-metre-long dog-friendly beach in a dune landscape that extends to the river mouth. The beach also has a nature interpretation centre; check local information about facilities before your visit. Playa Beniesma has a naturist section and the remains of a historic watchtower dating from the 16th century. L'Estanyol is 900 metres long and lies near a micro-reserve for flora. This covers 1.3 hectares of native and endemic plants, as well as a designated habitat for the endangered Kentish plover.

Playa Pedraroja is 550 metres long. Its features include an accessible access point, sports courts, and lifeguard and rescue services. These service details may vary seasonally; check them before your visit. Playa Grau is part of Moncófar's coastal urban area and is known for its viewpoints. The beaches therefore offer a variety of options, from dunes and nature watching to viewpoints and seasonal services.

Exploring on Foot and by Bike

The Sendero Azul del Belcaire is a four-kilometre coastal trail. In recognition of its ecological value, it was awarded European Blue Trail status in 2017. Check for notices about temporary works before setting out. The clearly stated distance also makes it easy to distinguish from the longer cycling leg: the Sendero Azul is four kilometres long, while the third stage of the EuroVelo 8 Mediterranean route in the Valencian Community runs 55 kilometres from Castelló to Sagunt.

EuroVelo 8 passes through Moncófar. Check the route conditions and signage before riding. Another way to explore the landscape is through its water heritage: an extensive network of irrigation channels and wells bears witness to the historic use of water and is connected to local agriculture. It adds insight into the area's agricultural character alongside its coastal and natural landscapes.

Local History and Everyday Culture

The Museo de Historia y Etnología de Moncofa presents agricultural, fishing and traditional ways of life through objects, tools and scenes of everyday life. Guided tours and activities are available for school groups on request. The Ermita de la Magdalena is an 18th-century religious building in the Grao, Moncófar's seafaring district. It has a maritime and religious character and was built over an Arab rábita.

Only wall remnants of the Torre Santa Isabel de Carrillo o Nova are visible. The watchtower was built between 1613 and an unknown date in the mid-17th century. The dates deliberately leave the construction period open. Together with the ermita and the remains of the watchtower at Playa Beniesma, these historic structures offer different insights into Moncófar's religious and maritime history.

Rice Dishes and September Events

Local cuisine combines seafood with produce from the vegetable gardens, particularly in rice dishes. The preparations mentioned include paella valenciana, arroz a banda, seafood paella and baked rice. The Jornades Gastronòmiques de l’Arròs i la Paella showcases local rice dishes prepared in a variety of ways. The event takes place in September; check the specific dates before your trip.
