Sot de Ferrer lies between the Sierra de Espadán to the north and the first foothills of the Sierra Calderona to the south. The Río Palancia valley crosses the municipality and curves around the town center from northwest to east. The town’s history adds stately architecture, religious buildings and archaeological traces to this landscape. When planning your trip, you can therefore distinguish between a natural and a cultural-historical focus.

Landscape and cave setting

The Cueva de la Moneda has a descending gallery leading to a narrow rock fissure about 20 meters long. The cave also serves as a stopover for a migratory bat species. Here, a distinctive geological formation and a connection with nature sit side by side; the cave setting differs in theme from the town’s historic buildings.

Palace and church architecture

The Palacio del Señor on Plaza de la Iglesia is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. It features distinctive late-13th-century pointed-arch architecture, as well as Gothic details from the 14th and 15th centuries. Its protected status and architectural forms offer two different points of reference for placing the building in its historical context.

The Iglesia Parroquial de la Inmaculada Concepción was completed in the 18th century in the Neoclassical style. The church houses a painting of the Immaculate Conception attributed to either Vicente Masip or Juan de Juanes. The attribution therefore remains uncertain; the two artists’ names are different possible attributions for the same painting.

The Ermita de San Antonio and the Calvario also offer their own historical point of reference. The Ermita is documented from the late 17th century onward. Construction of the Calvario began on Monte de San Antonio in 1801. Together, the Ermita and the Calvario form an excursion destination with sweeping views. Here, the chapel’s long-documented history and the specific start date for construction of the Calvario are two distinct chronological details.

Archaeological remains and everyday history

At the Yacimiento de Rochinas, the structural lines are well preserved despite the site’s ruined state. The complex comprises 17 rooms connected by a central corridor and measures 35 by 19 meters. The number of rooms, the connecting corridor and the overall dimensions describe different aspects of the floor plan: its layout as well as its extent.

Everyday history comes to life at the washhouses. The Lavadero de la Rocha de la Escuela is a public washhouse beside the Acequia Mayor. Below the Lavadero de la Luz is the town’s last washhouse. Sick people washed there to help prevent epidemics and infections among the population. These two places thus point both to washhouses as public facilities and to a specific past use.

The SL-CV 186 runs parallel to the Río Palancia to the Iberian settlement of La Rochina. The trail offers views of the Sierra Calderona and the Sierra de Espadán. The river route, destination and mountain views provide specific points of reference for anyone wishing to include a described trail in their stay.
