A hiking trail connects Argelita with Buey Negro Castle: the SL-CV91 “Climb to La Muela” is 3,668 metres long and takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Argelita lies inland in the Alto Mijares comarca in Castellón. Rural and nature tourism, along with paths and routes, are among the town’s main attractions. There is also a technically challenging trail-running route, sections of the GR-333, places to enjoy the water, and buildings with religious and historical significance. When choosing what to explore, it is worth considering the different profiles separately: walking time, elevation gain, connection to the river and architectural history appeal to different travel interests.
Routes with Different Profiles
An approximate duration is given for the SL-CV91: about 1 hour and 20 minutes for the 3,668-metre route between Argelita and Buey Negro Castle. The Canaleta Trail has a different focus. It is a 17-kilometre trail-running route with 1,028 metres of elevation gain, running mostly along technically challenging paths in Alto Mijares. While the walking time provides a guide for the SL-CV91, the Canaleta Trail is described in terms of elevation gain and technical difficulty. This makes it possible to distinguish between the two routes based on the details provided, without equating their different demands.
The GR-333 long-distance trail of the Mancomunidad Espadán-Mijares also passes through Argelita. Stage 11 runs from Toga to Argelita, and Stage 12 from Argelita to Vallat. In this sequence, the town is both the destination for one stage and the starting point for the next. If you plan to follow one of these routes, check the current route, signposting and stage details; conditions and information may change.
Riverside and Spring Water Spots
Along the stretch of the Villahermosa that runs through Argelita, there is a 450-metre bathing area divided into three sections. A natural swimming pool is located beside the sports grounds. Seasonal access and usage conditions may vary at both bathing spots. Fuente de Sabinar is a natural spring; its flow may change seasonally.
Fuente de la Santa Cruz (1930) is also among the water destinations mentioned. It is about a 30-minute walk from the village, although trail conditions may change. Different details should therefore be taken into account when planning: an approximate walking time is given for Fuente de la Santa Cruz, while the seasonally changing flow is a factor at Fuente de Sabinar.
Buildings and Religious Heritage
The Iglesia Parroquial de Santa Ana dates from the 17th century and is in the Churrigueresque Baroque style. A relic of the Holy Cross, brought from Rome in 1657, is still kept in the church. The architecture and the relic thus offer two specific points of interest in learning about the building: the church’s style and the history of the religious object.
The Torre de Zei-Abu-Zeit has been restored and bears an Arabic inscription dated 1252. At the Castillo Palacio de Ceyt Abu Ceyt, the two towers were restored in 1986 and remain in good condition. A reservation with the tourist information office is required to visit the museum in the Torre Redonda. As reservation requirements may change, check them before your visit.
