Barracas offers two clearly distinct ways to plan a trip: the Vía Verde de Ojos Negros is a named route for getting active, while churches, historic houses and local traditions offer ways to explore the area through its architectural history and events. If you are looking for a focus for your stay, you can choose between outdoor activities and specific cultural or event themes, without having to follow a fixed itinerary.
Vía Verde and recreation area
A particularly well-adapted section of the Vía Verde de Ojos Negros runs through Barracas. The route can be used on foot, by bicycle or in a wheelchair, with the exception of some ramps outside the original railway alignment. If you are planning to use a wheelchair, take this exception into account for the specific route and check the route conditions before setting out.
At the entrance to the Vía Verde at Estación del Palancar, there is a recreation area with a forest lodge, a playground, barbecue areas and public toilets. These facilities may change over time; check their condition before your visit. This makes it possible to combine the route section with a stop at the entrance, without assuming that the facilities will remain unchanged.
Churches, houses and architectural history
The Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol is a 16th-century Gothic masonry church. Its single-nave body has three bays, and the choir terminates in a square end. The Ermita de San Roque also has a three-bay masonry nave, along with exterior buttresses, a gabled roof and a west-facing choir end. The two buildings therefore offer different architectural points of interest: at San Pedro, the square choir end stands out, while San Roque also features its roof form, buttresses and the orientation of its choir.
The history of the Ermita de San Roque is connected with the Valencia–Calatayud railway line. It was built as a replacement after the original chapel was demolished to make way for the line. A procession takes place at the ermita on 15 August.
The historic houses on Calle Teruel include buildings dating from the 17th century; house number 15 is one of the oldest buildings in Barracas. An inscription on the Fuente de San Pedro bears the year 1576. The remains of a stone coat of arms and the keys of Saint Peter can also be seen there.
Routes, nature and event dates
The Ruta del Santo Grial de Valencia runs from the Monasterio de San Juan de la Peña in Aragón to Valencia and passes through Barracas. For travellers interested in the Santo Grial, the town is therefore part of the route between Aragón and Valencia.
The Balsa Grande is next to a recreation area. A natural spring feeds it from the centre, and it is also home to native species such as moorhens. The spring and wildlife give this place its own connection with nature, alongside the buildings and the Vía Verde.
Event dates also vary over the course of the year: the Carrera de Montaña 15k has been held in Barracas in November since 2018; dates and format may vary. The Feria Agrícola, Ganadera, de Caza y Tiempo Libre de Barracas takes place in June and has been held there since 2005; the programme may also vary. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific dates and programme in advance.
