A visit to Aldea del Fresno can take you from the town’s heritage to its river landscapes and longer circular routes. The historic remains of Puente de La Pedrera, the seasonal natural swimming area Playa del Alberche and routes of varying lengths give your trip several clear focal points. If you are planning an overnight stay, you can first decide whether architectural history, summer swimming or outdoor activities will shape your visit.

Architectural history and historic sites

The historic remains of Puente de La Pedrera date from the 18th century. The bridge is designated a Bien de Interés Patrimonial and has been consolidated and musealised. Iglesia San Pedro Apóstol was built in 1752; its tower is listed in the 1986 building protection catalogue with protection grade 2. The two structures offer different historical perspectives on the town.

The ruins of Noria Árabe stand on the banks of the Río Perales and are listed with protection grade 2. Some authors date the site to before the 12th century. Granja El Santo is a complex of buildings of provincial interest. Its oldest element is the Ermita de San Saturio or San Saturnín, dating from the 14th century, which is designated as being of regional historical and artistic interest. The Granja is about 2.5 kilometres from Aldea del Fresno in the direction of Chapinería; access is via a private road. Check access arrangements before visiting.

River landscapes and seasonal swimming

Playa del Alberche is a sandy beach in a wooded landscape at the confluence of the Alberche and Perales rivers and the Berciana stream. The Comunidad de Madrid includes Playa del Alberche on its seasonal 2026 list of natural swimming areas suitable for swimming in summer. There are accessible parking spaces at the beach, and the water is usually not deep there. Part of the municipality of Aldea del Fresno lies within a Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves (ZEPA), a special protection area for birds.

Circular routes and their different highlights

The Cordel de las Merinas circular route is 18 kilometres long, starts in the town centre and can be completed by bicycle, on horseback or on foot. It passes through Mediterranean holm oak woodland, which provides habitat for woodland birds and reveals signs of mammals. The Cañada Segoviana – Playa del Alberche route is a 19-kilometre circular route of low difficulty that also starts in the town centre. It leads to the banks of the Río Alberche and the Playa del Alberche recreation area. Along the way, the landscape is shaped by a dehesa dominated by holm oaks, where deer, wild boar and other wildlife can be found, although sightings are not guaranteed.

At almost the same length, the two circular routes offer different points to consider when choosing: the Cañada Segoviana is low difficulty and leads to the beach, while the Cordel is specifically suitable for walking, cycling or riding on horseback. As route conditions and access can change, check the current situation before setting out. There is also the Ruta MTB por Aldea del Fresno y el Río Perales for mountain bikes: a 39-kilometre, moderately difficult circuit with 556 metres of elevation gain. It starts at the municipal swimming pool via Paseo de la Estación and is not signposted.

Plan your travel dates and stay

Aldea del Fresno holds patron saint festivities in honour of San Pedro Apóstol. The specific programme dates can vary from year to year; if you would like to plan your trip around the festivities, check the dates for the relevant year. The season is also an important factor when planning to swim: the regional 2026 list names summer as the swimming season at Playa del Alberche.
