Highlights in Móstoles include Mudéjar architecture, contemporary art and local history. For outdoor exercise, the Senda de Móstoles a El Álamo offers a long linear hiking route. When planning, it is worth taking these different interests and the time required for each into account.
Architecture, local history and art
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a Mudéjar-style building. After numerous restorations, only the apse and tower remain of its historic structure. The apse is semicircular and decorated with horseshoe arches. Anyone interested in architectural forms can observe both the shape and the characteristic arch motif in these surviving parts.
The Museo CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo focuses on contemporary artistic and cultural practices in the regional, national and international context. It also houses the Comunidad de Madrid’s contemporary art collection, which contains more than 3,000 works; its size may change as the collection grows. Since exhibitions change, check the current program for specific visit dates.
The Museo de la Ciudad de Móstoles offers a different perspective on time: its permanent exhibition covers the city’s history from the 19th century to the present. At the Casa-Museo de Andrés Torrejón, the building has been restored and furnished in the style of the early 19th century. It illustrates domestic life during the Spanish War of Independence. Andrés Torrejón lived and died in this house.
The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Santos adds another distinct historical note. It was built in the early 17th century in the Jesuit style and features a Churrigueresque altarpiece. Móstoles thus offers a range of ways to explore history and art: a Mudéjar-style church, an ermita with an altarpiece, the city’s history from the 19th century onward, and a museum of contemporary art.
Green spaces and hiking trail
More than 2 million square meters of green space are spread across Móstoles’ various neighborhoods. Móstoles is also part of the protected natural area Parque Regional del Curso Medio del río Guadarrama y su entorno.
The Senda de Móstoles a El Álamo is an easy linear walking and hiking trail. It starts in Móstoles and reaches the Río Guadarrama after 4 km. The route runs parallel to the river for 7 km. The 4 km to the Río Guadarrama should not be confused with the full route, which is 18.3 km one way. The hike takes 6 to 7 hours on foot. If you plan to complete the entire route, set aside this walking time as a separate, longer block of time.
Guided tours, performances and getting there
On the first Sunday of each month, the Ayuntamiento de Móstoles offers free guided tours of historic Móstoles. Since the program may change or a date may be rescheduled, check the date before your visit. Teatro del Bosque hosts the main theater, dance and music performances offered by the Ayuntamiento; this program also changes.
Options for getting to the Museo CA2M include Renfe’s C5 line, the metro via Móstoles Central and Pradillo, and bus lines L1, L2, 519, 520, 521, 525, 526 and 527. Check schedules and routes before traveling, as transport connections may change.
When planning your stay, weigh up your interests: the Museo de la Ciudad offers an introduction to local history, the CA2M focuses on contemporary art, and the full Senda takes 6 to 7 hours to walk. If you want to attend guided tours or performances, plan your visit around the relevant dates. This will help you tailor the length of your stay to the cultural and hiking activities you want to focus on.
