San Lorenzo de El Escorial brings together a complex monastic site, architectural history, an annual pilgrimage and natural attractions. This gives you a clear choice when planning your visit: you can explore the town primarily for its cultural history or combine sightseeing with landscapes and environmental education. The Monastery and Site of the Escurial has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1984. It lies at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama, north of Madrid.
A monastic complex with several functions
The Monastery and Site of the Escurial comprises a monastery, a church, a royal palace, a school, a seminary and a royal library. The buildings are arranged around eleven main courtyards and three service courtyards. The complex is therefore more than a single religious building: royal, educational and ecclesiastical institutions, as well as the library, are all part of its design. If you are interested in architecture and history, you can explore this complex as a unified subject rather than focusing on just one of its components.
The Casita del Infante and the performing arts
Another historic site is the Casita del Infante in the Dehesa de la HerrerĂa, west of the Monasterio. It was commissioned in 1771 from architect Juan de Villanueva for Infante Gabriel de BorbĂłn, a son of Carlos III. The gardens of the Casita offer a view of the Monasterio. Its architectural history thus complements a view of the complex from another notable location.
The Real Coliseo Carlos III also has its own architectural history: work began in 1770, and construction was practically complete by May 1771. The theatre was restored between 1974 and 1979. Since then, prominent figures from theatre and music have performed on its stage. The Coliseo offers a different cultural focus from the monastic complex, while both places reveal San Lorenzo’s history in their own ways.
September pilgrimage
The RomerĂa de Nuestra Señora de la Virgen de Gracia has been designated a Fiesta de InterĂ©s TurĂstico Nacional since 1988. It takes place on the second Sunday in September. During the main procession, decorated carriages set off from the Lonja of the Real Monasterio on a Sunday; the procession ends at the chapel in the Bosque de La HerrerĂa. If you want to plan your trip around this occasion, check the programme and route in advance. This way, you can make it a planned part of your visit rather than assuming it will be an event you can attend spontaneously.
Landscape and environmental education
La HerrerĂa has been designated a Paraje Pintoresco since 1961. Another way to include the landscape in your plans is the route to Silla de Felipe II: the round trip is 7 kilometres long, takes about an hour and is rated as easy. Silla offers panoramic views. As trail conditions may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out.
The gardens of the Casita del Infante also offer a view of the Monasterio; this viewpoint complements the panorama from Silla, though the two places offer different experiences. Insectpark offers a different focus: it is an environmental education centre in the pine forests of Abantos and the La HerrerĂa area. It has a collection of living and naturalised microfauna. Activities are aimed at children, families and schools; check the latest dates in advance.
Sightseeing and getting there
The Bosque de la HerrerĂa offers theatrical tours and family outings in the town or countryside with knowledgeable staff. These cover natural and cultural landmarks, history and traditions. San Lorenzo also offers guided tours led by official tourism guides, as well as characters from past eras who bring the 16th and 18th centuries to life. As dates and providers may change, check the current options before your trip.
The nearest railway station is in neighbouring El Escorial and can be reached from San Lorenzo de El Escorial on city bus route L1. Check transport information before setting off.
