San Martín de Valdeiglesias offers several distinct reasons to stay: Castillo de la Coracera in the town center, living plant sculptures at El Bosque Encantado, wine and two hiking options with different focuses. This lets you make culture, nature or exercise the focus, rather than giving all activities equal weight. Each place and theme represents a different way to discover the town.

Castle, Architecture and Local History

Castillo de la Coracera is in the town center and has been largely restored; it is open to visitors. The fortress was built in the 15th century by Don Álvaro de Luna, a favorite of King Juan II. During visits, audiovisual information is projected onto the walls. It tells the story of the region and the fortress and explains architectural features. In this way, the historic site is paired with interpretation that addresses both the building and its regional context.

Those interested in religious architecture will also find a striking feature at Iglesia de San Martín Obispo: a central dome, seven meters high, rises above the crossing.

Another cultural focal point is Centro Cultural La Estación, housed in the station’s former reception building. It hosts numerous exhibitions and also plays an important sociocultural role for the people of San Martín de Valdeiglesias. The exhibition program may change. Café Teatro is also part of the town’s architectural and cultural history: in 2000, it was restored and reconstructed to accommodate a 200-seat theater, two exhibition halls and a cafeteria.

Garden Art, Landscape and Trails

At El Bosque Encantado, the focus shifts from buildings to sculpted plant life. The botanical garden features more than 300 living sculptures and over 500 plant species from around the world. The two figures represent different aspects: plants are shaped into sculptures, while the garden also brings together a wide variety of species from across the globe. For travelers more interested in botanical diversity than architecture, it offers a distinct area to explore.

The natural surroundings of San Martín de Valdeiglesias are irrigated by the Alberche River. Alongside the landscaped garden, the landscape and its relationship with the river are also themes to consider during your stay.

There are two different options for walking. Mirador del Romanticismo is a circular hike covering 12.94 kilometers and rated moderate in difficulty. Check the current route listing before planning. By contrast, the “San Martín de Valdeiglesias Imprescindible” route is a walk to the town’s most significant buildings. Route conditions and the availability of the downloadable track may change; check both before setting out. This lets you choose between a walk focused on architecture and a longer circular route with a stated distance and difficulty rating.

Wine as a Regional Focus

San Martín de Valdeiglesias is one of the four subzones of the D.O. Vinos de Madrid. For a more hands-on wine experience, Bodega Las Moradas de San Martín offers guided tours of its vineyards and cellars, as well as wine tastings. The regional designation and a visit to the winery offer two different ways to explore the subject: the D.O. identifies the subzone, while the tours and tastings include vineyards and cellars. Those who want to make wine the focus of their stay will find it offers a distinct theme alongside the buildings, garden and trails.
