Alameda del Valle offers a mix of local history and regional landscapes: in the village, stops lead to former workplaces and gathering places, while route options range from a short walk to a several-hour loop. At the same time, the entire municipality is included in the zoning of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. Culture, trails and protected-area boundaries therefore shape different aspects of planning a trip.
Local history through churches and former gathering places
The Ruta urbana por los Recuerdos de Alameda is a circular route about 1.5 km long, with fourteen stops. They are located at buildings, former workplaces and places where residents used to gather. The route brings local history to life through specific everyday places. Another perspective on history can be found at the parish church of Santa Marina Virgen y Mártir: construction began in the 16th century under the direction of master builder Juan de la Piedra, and the church is dated to the period from the 16th to the 18th century. The church contains, among other things, figures of Santa Marina and Santa Ana; a figure of Santa Ana dates from the 13th century.
The Ermita de Santa Ana is a well-preserved 18th-century building. It lies about 3 km south of the village center, along the path beside the Arroyo de Santa Ana. The Antiguas Escuelas also tell a story of former use: the renovated former school building, dating from the mid-20th century, now houses the Aula Polivalente y de Difusión Turística. The Sala de exposiciones Antiguas Escuelas features a permanent exhibition, live birdwatching cameras and a municipal model. Check local opening arrangements before visiting.
Routes and the municipality’s zoning
For a longer walk, the Ruta a Arroyo de la Saúca is listed as approximately 6 km long, taking around four hours and involving about 200 m of elevation gain; its difficulty level is moderate. It is distinct from the Ruta Urbana del Arroyo de La Saúca, which is about 1 km long, runs in one direction and is considered easy. The Ruta urbana por los Recuerdos de Alameda offers another way to explore local history, with its circular route and fourteen stops. The distance, duration and difficulty details help you choose between these routes according to your available time and preferred level of challenge.
The protected-area zoning is also important for understanding the municipality. The entire municipality of Alameda del Valle is included in the zoning of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park: the higher-lying areas are part of the national park, while the rest belongs to the peripheral protection zone. Across the wider region of Valle Alto del Lozoya, there are numerous signposted trails, recreation and leisure areas, viewpoints and self-guided interpretation routes. These are part of the regional context; check individual facilities and routes locally.
Along its course through Alameda del Valle, the Río Lozoya is included in the trout fishing waters zone of the Comunidad de Madrid. If you wish to fish there, follow the current regional regulations. Mushrooms are also a seasonal feature: typical meadow species include king oyster mushrooms, fairy ring mushrooms and wild mushrooms; pine forests are home to numerous typical species, such as boletes and Níscalos. Alameda del Valle and Valle Alto del Lozoya are considered suitable places to enjoy mushroom-based dishes. Only gather or eat wild mushrooms if you follow appropriate safety precautions and applicable regulations.
Plan your journey and dates
Two interurban bus routes serve Alameda del Valle. Route 194 connects Madrid with Rascafría, while route 194A connects Buitrago del Lozoya with Rascafría. There are two stops in the village: one at the junction of the M-604 and Calle Grande, and one in the main square, Plaza de Santa Marina, by the town hall. Check the current timetable before travelling.
A mass and the traditional auction are held in connection with Santa Ana. Afterwards, the town hall organizes a traditional paella in the adjoining meadow. If you wish to plan your trip around this celebration, check the dates in advance.
