In Cubillos del Sil, nature trails, viewpoints and cultural heritage offer different focal points for a stay. If you are looking for accommodation, you might first consider whether circular trails and scenery, historic buildings or a visit during a festival are the main draw. Each of these interests has specific points of interest, from the former mining railway to a parish church with several construction phases.
Circular Trails, Viewpoints and Nature
The Senda del Monte Meno is a signposted circular trail with blue directional markers. The Senda del Mirador–Refugio Meno is also laid out as a marked circular trail. The Senda de los Túneles offers something different: this circular trail passes through a tunnel on the former mining railway. It thus combines a hiking route with a visible link to the railway’s former use; however, this does not tell you anything about the trails’ duration or difficulty.
The viewpoints also differ in what they look out over. From the Mirador del Meno, panoramic views stretch across the Bárcena Reservoir. From Peña del Cuervo, you can see a large part of the El Bierzo region. The Senda de los Túneles offers views over the upper part of the reservoir. The route by the reservoir has picnic areas and shaded places to rest; conditions at the rest areas may vary. This means that an outing can focus on different landscape impressions, rather than all the viewpoints showing the same thing.
For nature enthusiasts, otters, wildcats, roe deer and wolves are among the wild animals associated with Cubillos del Sil. Sightings are not guaranteed. Wildlife is therefore another possible focus, alongside the marked circular trails and the views of the reservoir or the wider landscape.
Buildings and Early History
The parish church of San Cristóbal shows evidence of several construction phases: its origins date back to the Middle Ages, and it was remodelled from the 16th century onwards. Its features include a vaulted ceiling and a bell façade with a cylindrical bell tower dating from the 17th century. There is a Baroque altarpiece at the altar. Anyone interested in architectural history can observe different features in a single building, rather than reducing the church to one particular period.
The Casa natal de Severo Gómez Núñez is a palatial house. Inside is a milestone from the time of Nero, found in Almázcara. A different kind of historical trace can be seen near Castromocho: the pre-Roman hillfort is located in Posadina and is open to visitors. Its defensive wall and ditches are clearly visible on the north side. The house and church architecture, along with the visible fortifications, offer different ways to explore the history of the town and its surroundings.
An important Roman road also passed through old Cubillos. It was later known as the Vía Nova and the Camino de Santiago; from the 18th century onwards, it was known as the road of Carlos III or the Carretera Vieja. This sequence shows how the names of the historic road changed over time.
