Espinoso de Compludo combines a historic village center with hiking trails in a deeply carved valley surrounded by chestnut, oak, and holm oak forests. When planning your stay, you can therefore explore two sides of the village: its streets and houses, and routes through forests, along streams and waterfalls, and to a high point. Espinoso is also a starting point for numerous hiking routes.

Hiking between the valley, stream, and high point

La Igualta connects San Cristóbal de Valdueza and Espinoso de Compludo. It passes through small oak forests, follows the Arroyo Pequeño for much of the way, and runs through the areas around both villages. The route includes the Pontón or Peña Blanca waterfalls, as well as La Igualta. Water levels at the waterfalls can vary depending on the season; the forest and stream shape the character of this route.

The Ruta de la Abadía Compludo offers another option: after passing through Espinoso de Compludo, it reaches an elevation of 1,100 meters. By comparison, La Igualta connects two villages and brings together the stream, forest, and waterfalls; the Ruta de la Abadía Compludo has a different character, with its high point.

Another trail leads from the Herrería de Compludo, past the former Roman mining area of La Miédula, to the village center of Espinoso de Compludo. On the climb to Puerto del Morredero, a turnoff leads to Espinoso. An unpaved track leads to Compludo.

Village Layout and Building History

The streets in the village center are narrow and irregular, apart from the main street. Numerous recesses, bends, and projecting parts of buildings create spaces for courtyards, corrales, and other in-between areas. As a result, the village’s character is shaped not only by individual buildings but also by the changing transitions between street and courtyard. Traditional houses often have load-bearing stone walls and roofs made of slate slabs.

The Iglesia de San Miguel stands on the southern edge of the village center. A window and the portal may date from the Romanesque period; both were reused during the modern reconstruction. The church thus brings together the possible earlier history of individual architectural elements and a modern reconstruction.

The Molino de Vegamolín is considered a structure of clear cultural and historical value and is already listed in the Marqués de Ensenada cadastre of 1753. An account from June 2026 describes the mill as still operating with its traditional system. If you are planning a visit, check in advance whether a tour is possible.

Planning Your Stay

Consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on the trails or on the area’s architectural history.
