Riaño offers several ways to shape a trip: the landscape around the reservoir, trails and a distinctive building history. When planning, you can choose a focus based on whether you want to take a boat trip, possibly combined with a hike, explore individual trails or visit cultural sites.
Reservoir, Landscape and Trails
The landscapes known as the Leonese Fjords emerged in the Montaña de Riaño after the creation of the Riaño Reservoir. Deep mountain valleys and sheer rock faces were flooded. This history shapes the way you see the landscape and gives an outing on the reservoir a special context.
On trips aboard the excursion boat on the Riaño Reservoir, passengers can disembark at certain points along the shore to start hikes, and are then brought back to the landing stage in Riaño. This makes it possible to combine a boat trip with a hike. If you are planning a trip, check the information for your chosen date in advance.
On land, too, the trails differ in their starting points and connections. You can begin the ascent of Pico Gilbo from Riaño on foot after crossing the viaduct, or start at the car park at the end of the viaduct, where the route begins. The Senda Riaño–Riaño starts at the road leading into town from the N-621 national highway. The PR-LE 52 Collado El Baile hiking trail connects with a variant from Las Viescas and Riaño at Prado de la Collada. The Camino de Santiago also passes through Riaño, via the so-called Ruta Vadiniense.
Relocated Churches and Building History
The Iglesia parroquial de Santa Águeda was formerly the church of San Martín in Pedrosa del Rey and was moved stone by stone. Its distinctive features include a 16th-century tower and a replica of a Romanesque portal at the main entrance. Another relocated church is the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario. It was moved stone by stone from La Puerta, a settlement that was flooded by the reservoir. Its chancel dates from the 13th or 14th century. The two churches offer a chance to see different periods of construction and local histories.
The Corro de Aluches provides an architectural contrast: this futuristic building was constructed in the last decade of the 20th century to a design by architect Félix Compadre. The Museo Etnográfico de Riaño features reconstructions of a smokehouse, a traditional forge and a local school. Together, these buildings and reconstructions offer different ways to explore Riaño’s history and architectural heritage.
An Annual Event
The Feria de Riaño takes place annually on the first Saturday after November 2. If you want to plan your trip around this date, check the specific programme in advance, as the exact details may change. This gives you a fixed date to plan around, while the landscape, trails and building history offer other possible focuses for your stay.
