The Sil runs through the entire municipality of Toreno from north to south. At the same time, the highest peak in the Sierra de Gistredo is visible from almost anywhere in the municipality. Mountain and mid-mountain terrain shapes the landscape; hiking, mountain biking and culture offer different ways to plan your trip.
Landscapes and Trails
Toreno has numerous easily accessible, well-marked routes for hiking and mountain biking. Conditions on individual trails may change; check the conditions on your chosen route before setting out. The routes described mainly differ in their landscapes and the destinations along the way.
The La Viñuela route runs from Toreno to Villar de las Traviesas through old mines. On the way back to Toreno, it passes through the valley of the River Velasco and along dense oak forests. This route brings mining history and woodland landscapes together. No walking time or distance is specified for this route.
Another route starts in Santa Marina del Sil and leads to the Bárcena Reservoir and Puente CantarĂn. The Sil stays in view on the return journey. The route between Matarrosa and Librán offers different waypoints: between San Pedro and Librán, a waterfall and rock art sites are among the attractions described.
A 52-kilometre mountain biking stage is also described. It follows trails and passes through villages such as Igüeña, as well as through the area near Villar de las Traviesas. This information refers to the stage and does not make it a route starting in Toreno.
Rock Art and Places of Interest
Buracón de los Mouros lies in the gorge of the River Primout near Librán and is considered the best-known and most important rock art site in the area. The San Pedro Mallo rock art complex is located near La Cueva, above the Camino Real to Librán. It includes schematic Bronze Age rock paintings. The area's rock art consists mostly of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic depictions; many engravings are difficult to interpret.
Toreno itself also has several named attractions: the parish church of San Juan Bautista, the medieval Picota, the Casa de las Secretarias, a stately manor house, and the bridge over the Sil, described as Roman. A route along a Roman road leads to Villar de las Traviesas; there, the Ermita de San Lorenzo and the Iglesia de Santiago Apostol are among the cultural attractions.
A route runs north of Toreno; an ancient Celtic castro is considered to be the settlement's origin. Archaeological sites complement routes through mining and river landscapes; not all destinations lie along the same trail.
