Zuzones lies on the banks of the Duero; its church and wine-growing history are two clearly identifiable themes here. The Church of San MartĂn de Tours stands on a rise in the land near the river. At the edge of the village, underground wine cellars have been preserved, and an old wine press house serves as a wine museum. The festivals and the monthly museum visit, which requires advance booking, provide clear dates to help you plan your trip.
Church and Historical Traces
San MartĂn de Tours is considered one of Zuzones’s most notable sights. The church stands on a rise in the land near the Duero; below it is a memorial plaque carved into the stone. It honours three religious figures from Zuzones who were beatified by the Vatican as martyrs of the Spanish Civil War. The church and plaque offer different points of emphasis: alongside the sacred building is a specific memorial to three people from the village. Together, the architecture and memorial plaque offer two ways to explore the history of the village.
A temple in Zuzones was built in the mid-13th century at the initiative of Abbot D. Mateo González. This gives the village’s religious history a specific date and a connection to a particular person. Compared with the wine press house dating from 1850, this date is several centuries earlier: the religious building and evidence of wine-growing thus provide different historical reference points.
Wine-Growing Between Cellars and Museum
Several underground wine cellars have been preserved at the edge of the village; some have an integrated wine press room. So these spaces were used for more than storage: a wine press room points to the pressing of grapes and makes processing visible as part of the history of wine-growing. The old wine press house, dating from 1850, was restored by the La Fernosa cultural association. Today it serves as a wine-growing museum and is classified as an asset of special cultural interest.
The museum can be visited on the last Saturday of each month by prior reservation. Plan your visit around this monthly date and book in advance.
Festivals on Set Dates
On 11 November, Zuzones celebrates the main festival in honour of its patron saint, San MartĂn de Tours. It includes a traditional Mass and a late-night verbena. Another date on the festival calendar is 13 June, when a Mass is held in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua. The two days mark different religious occasions; the November date includes a verbena as well as Mass. This also gives you a concrete basis for comparing the June festival with the November patron saint’s day when planning your year. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the current date in advance.
A Viewpoint in Zuzones
Zuzones also has a viewpoint. If you would like to include it in your plans, check its condition before visiting.
