A Renaissance window with azulejos, narrow river valleys and hiking routes with very different time and distance requirements are the clear highlights of Espinosa De Los Monteros. You can discover architectural history, culture and landscape side by side. For planning purposes, there is a clear difference between a 9-kilometre circular route and an 80-kilometre long-distance trail.
Getting there and finding your way
The railway station is at the entrance to the town, on the Ferrocarril de la Robla line, which connects La Robla in León with Bilbao. If you are planning to travel by train, check the current passenger timetable in advance. This lets you distinguish the station’s location from the question of which train connections are available during your travel dates.
Choose hiking trails by time and difficulty
The signposted Senda del Monte Edilla is a moderately difficult 9-kilometre circular route. The estimated duration is 2 hours and 30 minutes; the route connects Espinosa De Los Monteros with the Monte Edilla oak forest. This means that both a specific distance and a time estimate are available for this hike.
The GR 1006 Ruta de los Monteros is designed differently: it is a signposted, difficult long-distance trail that runs in one direction only. It covers 80 kilometres from Espinosa De Los Monteros to Oña; the estimated duration is 23 hours. Comparing the two makes it clear that not only the difficulty, but also the route format and time required, differ significantly from the Senda del Monte Edilla.
The easy PR-BU 88 Entre Prados is an out-and-back trail between Quintanilla de los Prados and Espinosa De Los Monteros. It passes through hay meadows, by huts and through a dense oak forest. The Camino de Noceda also starts in Espinosa De Los Monteros and leads across green meadows to the Vallejas beech forest, which lies at the foot of impressive limestone cliffs. Alongside the Monte Edilla oak forest, this offers a chance to see a different landscape: a beech forest framed by cliffs.
Architectural history in streets and buildings
The Museo Etnográfico Cuatro RĂos Pasiegos is located at Calle Campo 10. The Torre de los Azulejos offers another perspective on architectural history: it dates from the second half of the 16th century, has been protected as a BIC since 1949, and features a Renaissance window decorated with azulejos.
The Iglesia de Santa Cecilia is a 16th-century Renaissance church with some Gothic remains. Construction began in 1527 on the site of a Romanesque church; a column attached to the south wall is all that remains of the earlier building. The Ruta Heráldica leads through the streets, squares and corners of Espinosa De Los Monteros. Along the way, the focus is on towers, palaces, churches, manor houses and traditional houses of Montañés architecture. This allows you to combine a closer look at individual buildings with a route through different parts of the town.
Tradition and landscape
The RomerĂa de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves takes place every year on 5 August in Las Machorras and includes a procession and traditional dances. It has been designated a FITR since 2001. Eight dancers, as well as the Mayoral, Rabadán and Bobo, take part in the RomerĂa. If you are planning your trip specifically around the festival, check that year’s programme in advance.
The municipality is arranged around three small, narrow valleys shaped by the Lunada, Rioseco and La SĂa rivers. Along the roads leading north stretches a landscape of native forests, heathland, green pastures, rocky peaks and scattered Pasiego huts. Pasiego culture also involves the seasonal movement of families and livestock to higher pastures between spring and autumn.
By the RĂo Trueba
Near the Torre de los Velasco, in the reservoir area, you’ll find the Piscinas Naturales de La Presa. There are opportunities for swimming and leisure activities, as well as green spaces, picnic areas and a maintained walking path along the RĂo Trueba. Facilities are subject to seasonal or local conditions; check before your visit.
