Estépar on the Río Arlanzón
Estépar lies on the right bank of the Río Arlanzón and combines a striking parish church with a local history dating back to the 12th century. This gives your trip two distinct points of interest: La Natividad de María, with its architecture and religious artworks, and the town’s medieval lordship and legal arrangements. Local attractions also include an open-air frontón, municipal swimming pools and patron saint festivities. The church offers specific architectural and artistic features, while the dated milestones place the town’s history in chronological context.
The parish church of La Natividad de María
The parish church of La Natividad de María is a good starting point if you want to understand Estépar’s cultural heritage. Its architecture is defined by two naves and a rectangular tower on the west side. Inside, the church preserves several altarpieces from the last third of the 18th century. The main altar is in the Rococo style and was created in 1785. The last third of the 18th century provides the broader timeframe, while 1785 marks a specific point within it for the main altar. A Gothic image of the Virgin Mary, titled Nuestra Señora de la Estepa, is housed in the central niche. For a thematic overview, you can therefore consider the building’s design and its furnishings separately.
Documents, jurisdiction and lordship
Estépar’s history also has clearly dated milestones. A document dated 1185 records that Estépar belonged to the territory of Muñó. On June 1, 1187, a charter granted the Dehesa of Monte de Estépar to the Real Monasterio de las Huelgas. Through this donation, Estépar was incorporated into the monastery’s seigneurial domain and placed under the jurisdiction of its abbess. The two early dates are close together but concern different matters: the 1185 record concerns Estépar’s affiliation with Muñó, while the 1187 charter concerns the donation of the Dehesa and its consequences for lordship. In the first third of the 16th century, Juan de Santo Domingo was the first lord of Estépar and Frandovínez. A ruling dated October 22, 1529, found in favor of the abbess and the representatives of Estépar’s municipal council. The “Mayorazgo de Estépar” was established in 1565. The references to the 16th century concern different matters: lordship over two towns, a ruling and an establishment.
Sports facilities in town
Local sports facilities include an open-air frontón and municipal swimming pools. The frontón in Estépar is located on C/ Las Bodegas. It has a concrete surface and artificial lighting. The municipal swimming pools are located at Camino de las bodegas s/n; swimming is available there as a sport. These are two different facilities at specific local addresses: a floodlit frontón with a concrete surface and swimming pools for swimming.
Patron saint festivities
The patron saint festivities are held in honor of the Virgen de la Estepa. The tourist guide lists the Natividad de Ntra. Señora celebration as taking place on the first weekend of September and on September 8; confirm the current dates before your trip.
