Explore Las Quintanillas through two distinct interests: the route options along the Vía Aquitania and the town’s religious and folklore history. Choosing a route gives a stage a clear focus; churches and chapels offer a cultural and historical perspective on the town. When planning a stay, you can first decide whether to focus on the route or local cultural topics—or whether both fit into your trip.

Routes around the Vía Aquitania

The original Vía Aquitania route through Las Quintanillas is 13.99 km long. From the town, there are two options in the direction of Villanueva de Argaño: one runs parallel to the N-120 along the original route of the Calzada Original, while the other is a detour via Palacios de Benaver. When choosing, first consider whether you want to follow the original route or include Palacios de Benaver in your itinerary. Check local walking conditions and possible diversions before setting out. Another route passes the Ermita de San Bartolomé de Pedrosa de Río Úrbel and then reaches Las Quintanillas.

Churches and chapels

The parish church stands on a small rise in Barrio Mayor. It is a Gothic church with a tower and an 18th-century Neoclassical portal. The Iglesia de San Facundo y San Primitivo was built in the 14th and 15th centuries in the Gothic style. The Ermita de la Virgen de la Expectación is also known as the Ermita de la Virgen de la O. Its origins date back to the 10th and 11th centuries; later work was carried out in the 15th century, and it was restored in the mid-20th century. On the outskirts of town, beside the N-120, the hermitage serves as a landmark for travelers and pilgrims in the area.

Folklore and regional tradition

Las Quintanillas is associated with Grupo Cantando Tradiciones, a traditional music and folklore group. Tierra Noble was founded by many people from Las Quintanillas to preserve the folklore and traditions of the villages in their region. The XI Muestra de Folklore Camino de Santiago was held in Las Quintanillas and organized by Tierra Noble. At this edition, groups from Burgos performed together with the Asociación Folklórica Os Ventos de Comesaña from Vigo, in the province of Pontevedra. A 2019 text describes how the local folklore event featuring the Tierra Noble de Las Quintanillas dance group became an annual fixture, with numerous groups from other provinces taking part.

A look at the municipality

Villarmentero is also part of the municipality of Las Quintanillas. There, the Church of San Esteban Protomártir is dedicated to Saint Stephen the Protomartyr. Rivers and streams shape the surroundings of Villarmentero; possible activities there include hiking and birdwatching. Nature therefore complements the churches and folklore history of the municipality.
