Grimaldo combines a clearly quantified stage of the Vía de la Plata with medieval architectural history. The large keep of the Castillo and the neighboring parish church are the architectural highlights; for hiking plans, the route to Galisteo offers specific distance and elevation data.

Hiking the Vía de la Plata

The Grimaldo–Galisteo stage is listed as stage 6 of the Camino de Santiago Vía de la Plata. It is 19.8 kilometers long, with an estimated duration of 3 hours and 40 minutes. The minimum elevation is 245 meters and the maximum is 482 meters. The section includes 148 meters of ascent and 337 meters of descent. The descent is therefore more than twice the ascent. The stage number places the section within the named pilgrimage route; the duration and elevation profile add further planning details to the distance.

Keep and parish church

Only the large keep of the Castillo de Grimaldo remains. It has three vaulted floors and a cistern; heraldic representations have also been preserved. The Castillo is classified as a medieval palatial castle and a late seigneurial fortress. It is privately owned and is not open to visitors. Check access status before your trip.

The parish church of the Immaculate Conception stands next to the keep and is a Gothic religious building. According to a historical account, it was built using stones that had fallen from the castle tower. This connects its Gothic classification with a specific historical relationship to the Castillo.

Former monasteries in the historical surroundings

The ruins of the former Franciscan monastery of La Moheda are about three kilometers from Grimaldo, unlike the parish church, which stands next to the keep. The complex is in ruins; surviving features include paintings, reliefs, and decorative architectural elements.

Another former Franciscan monastery is Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles. It lies between Grimaldo and Mirabel, near a turnoff from the Roman road that ran from the ford at Alconétar through Cañaveral to Casas de Millán. The two monastery sites offer different historical points of interest: La Moheda for its surviving artistic and architectural elements, and Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles for its proximity to a historic road junction.

Festivals and accommodation planning

Festivals listed in Grimaldo include the Fiestas de San José and the Romería de la Inmaculada. Grimaldo is one kilometer from the road to Holguera.
