Gata combines specific works of art with natural sites along the Río San Blas and in the Sierra. The annual festivals also help with travel planning: Santiago Apóstol is celebrated on 25 July, and the pilgrimage to San Blas takes place on the second Sunday in August. Depending on when you travel, you can focus on historic sites, the landscape or a particular festival.

Church Art from Different Periods

The parish of San Pedro was already in existence in 1257. In 1410, a general chapter of the Order of Alcántara was held in the church. These dates point to two distinct aspects of the town’s history: its early parish history and a specific assembly of the order. It is also worth distinguishing between the dates when the main altar and its paintings were created. Pedro de Paz created the altar between 1550 and 1560; the paintings are by Pedro de Córdoba and were completed between 1605 and 1609. The altar and paintings therefore belong to different phases of work.

The Ermita del Humilladero brings together further periods and art forms. It contains a Baroque altarpiece from the 18th century and a sculpture of the Crucified Christ created by Pedro de Paz in 1593. Wall paintings depicting the Last Supper date from around the late 16th century. For travelers interested in religious art, this offers a different focus from the works in San Pedro: here, the altarpiece, sculpture and wall paintings stand side by side.

Further Traces and Vistas

The Torre de la Almenara is a pentagonal tower made of stone and lime. The historic Villa Gata is designated an Asset of Cultural Interest. A coat of arms of Charles I adorns the Fuente del Chorro. These details highlight different aspects: the shape of a structure, a cultural designation and a heraldic emblem. They complement the church art with other ways of exploring Gata’s heritage.

The landscape has its own appeal, too. The Ermita de San Blas stands high in the Sierra, surrounded by chestnut trees, and its elevation affords wide-ranging views.

Arboretum, Botanical Garden and Río San Blas

The Puente de la Huerta Nature Interpretation Centre includes a museum room and an arboretum with around 45 tree species from the five continents. The approximate number of species and their origins across five continents give the arboretum a different focus from the historic art sites: here, the emphasis is on the diversity of the trees and their geographical origins.

A bibliographic reference to Gata’s Botanical Garden dates from around 1815. One specimen is considered to be in good condition; it stands 11 metres tall and measures 5.97 metres in circumference at the base. These two measurements describe different dimensions and show that height and trunk circumference can be considered separately here.

There is a natural swimming area in the clean waters of the Río San Blas. It has toilets, restaurants and parking. Swimming conditions may vary by season, and the facilities may change. Check the current conditions and facility availability before your visit. The swimming area offers a practical nature-focused option alongside the cultural sites and Sierra vistas.

Festivals and Pilgrimage as Reasons to Travel

The Santiago Apóstol festival is celebrated in Gata every year on 25 July. It includes a garlic market in the main square and a tasting of Vino de Pitarra. The market and wine tasting give the festival its own local character. If you want to plan your trip around this date, you can build the fixed July date into your plans.

The pilgrimage to San Blas follows a different annual rhythm: it takes place on the second Sunday in August. Participants make their way up into the Sierra on foot or on horseback. The exact date therefore depends on which Sunday in August it falls, while Santiago Apóstol is held on 25 July. These two dates offer a clear choice if you want a festival or pilgrimage to shape your stay. Art, nature and festivals offer different ways to experience the area without having to combine them into a fixed daily itinerary.
