The monastery church and a restored Roman kiln give Sant Miquel de Fluvià two distinct points of interest: medieval religious architecture on the one hand, and an archaeological kiln structure on the other. Also worth exploring are the former use of water at La font i el rentador, the Fluvià River as an ecological corridor, and a circular walking route through named districts. Together, these offer several ways to enjoy a stay focused on culture, local history and landscape.
Monastery Church and Former Monastery Complex
The church of the Monestir de Sant Miquel de Fluvià was consecrated in 1066. Its floor plan is basilical, with a short transept and a group of three apses. Alongside its historical date, these features draw attention to the church’s spatial layout.
Archaeological and restoration work has also enhanced and revealed the moat, the layout of the cloister and the former abbot’s palace. This brings other elements of the former monastery complex into view alongside the church.
The Forn Romà: an Archaeological Structure
The Forn Romà de Sant Miquel de Fluvià was discovered in 1974 during roadworks. It is a vertical, single-chamber kiln with a square floor plan; a central pillar supports the grate. Following restoration, the kiln is in good condition and protected by a solid masonry structure. Its chamber, pillar and grate give the archaeological description a tangible architectural form.
Water History and River Landscape
At La font i el rentador, you can trace the former use of spring water: excess water was first channelled into a public livestock trough and then into the village washhouse. The washhouse was rebuilt during the Second Republic. At the end of the 19th century, a stone façade was added to the spring; a rectangular platform was built in front, with benches along the sides. A staircase with numerous steps leads to the spring—a practical point to keep in mind when planning your visit.
The Fluvià River is an ecological corridor linking the volcanic area of La Garrotxa with the coastal region. Its vertebrate fauna includes the Mediterranean barbel and the Eurasian otter. Both the wider landscape and the river’s wildlife are among the area’s natural attractions.
Circular Route, Visits and Fira Oficis
The description of Ruta 170, published in 2025, is based on an earlier walk and describes it as a fairly flat circular route. It starts in Sant Miquel de Fluvià and passes through the districts of Palau and Santa Eulàlia. Check the route before setting out for a walk.
Since 2023, Fira Oficis has taken place on the first Sunday in June. Check the dates of the relevant edition when planning your trip. The programme includes demonstrations of traditional crafts and stalls selling handicrafts and food products; details may vary from one edition to another.
Two types of visits are also offered in Sant Miquel de Fluvià, and are open to all visitor groups. Their schedules vary by season. If a visit is important for your travel dates, check the relevant dates in advance.
