Bolvir offers a journey through several periods and themes: El Castellot has Iberian, Roman and medieval phases, while churches and chapels are distinguished by their different layouts and works of art. At Espai CeretĂ nia, archaeology is presented through information panels, artefacts and virtual reality. There are also walking routes of various lengths, golf and panoramic views across Cerdanya. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering whether you would prefer to focus on archaeology, architecture or outdoor activities.

Archaeological traces and how they are presented

El Castellot is one of the few Iberian settlements in the Pyrenees and is considered the most significant settlement of the Ceretani discovered to date. Overlapping Iberian, Roman and medieval phases give the site its historical depth. El Castellot is therefore a starting point for anyone who wants to explore the region’s history through its different settlement periods.

The permanent exhibition at Espai CeretĂ nia explains the different phases of the archaeological site through information panels and display cases containing recovered objects. Virtual reality headsets add an immersive journey through time, taking visitors back to the period when Hannibal crossed this area with his army and famous elephants. The panels and display cases provide context for the phases represented by the finds, while the headsets recreate a single historical scene.

Churches, chapels and works of art

Santa Cecília de Bolvir is a single-nave Romanesque church with a semicircular apse. The parish church of Santa Cecília also houses a Gothic altarpiece from the 15th century, originally from the church of Nostra Senyora de l’Esperança. Its architectural form and artwork belong to different art-historical categories: Romanesque architecture and Gothic altarpiece art.

The present-day church of Sant Climent de Talltorta was built in 1667 as a rectangular, single-nave structure with three side chapels. The murals at Sant Climent de Talltorta date from the 18th century and are classified as a Cultural Asset of National Interest. Sant Climent thus offers a way to distinguish between the building’s history and the later-dated murals.

The Capilla de la Esperanza de Bolvir was built in 1347. Its features include a single-nave body, a barrel vault and a bell gable. Details of its nave, vault and bell gable offer a concrete introduction to its architecture.

Nostra Senyora del Remei stands on a promontory and offers panoramic views across Cerdanya. A local tradition is the gathering for Saint John’s Day on 24 June. The focus here is both its elevated location, with views across the region, and a recurring custom.

Walking routes, golf and planning your trip

Bolvir has a network of health-focused walking routes, with short, medium and long options. Their different lengths offer another way to shape your trip if you would like to include walks alongside historic sites.

The Real Club de Golf Cerdaña has 27 holes across four different courses. It was designed by Javier Arana and inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII in 1929. The number of holes and courses describes the facility, while its designer and inauguration add to its history.

When looking for a hotel in Bolvir, you can first decide which aspect you would like to shape your stay: archaeological history, churches and art, walking routes or golf.
