Vilobí d’Onyar can be explored through three distinct themes: the historic layout of the centre, the crater of Volcà de la Crosa and the landscape along the Onyar. There are also trails through fields, riverbanks and Mediterranean forests. For planning purposes, it helps to keep these themes separate: architecture and local history, volcanic landscapes, or a walk along the Onyar each offer a different focus.
Local History and Chapel
In its historic centre, Vilobí d’Onyar preserves the layout of a formerly fortified medieval Sagrera. This means that the layout of the settlement itself is part of its historic character, not just a single building. The Ermita de Santa Margarida provides a distinct architectural point of interest: it is a rectangular, single-nave chapel in the Romanesque tradition. Its rectangular plan, single-nave layout and Romanesque tradition together create a distinctive architectural profile. Visitors interested in medieval settlement layouts can view the structure of a historic centre alongside the form of an individual chapel.
Volcanic Crater and Geological Route
Volcà de la Crosa is the focus of a geological outing. Its crater is 1,250 metres in diameter and has a distinctive C-shape. The official Volta al Volcà is a 5 km circular route around the volcano; the walking time is about 1 hour and 30 minutes. There are five geological points of interest along the route. These add further sites of geological interest to the view of the crater’s shape. The approximate walking time helps you fit this outing into your day; the distance, time and geological stops describe different aspects of the same circuit.
Les Guilloteres also tells the story of how the volcanic landscape has been used: it was once a site for extracting volcanic aggregates and has now been converted into an interpretation centre for Volcà de la Crosa. Les Guilloteres has a car park and a viewpoint. From there, you can see the crater to the southeast, as well as forests and cultivated land to the north and west. Alongside the geology, the focus is therefore also on the site’s former use and the specified views of the landscape.
Walks along the Onyar
The Itinerari Ruta de l’Onyar is an easy walk through Vilobí d’Onyar. It runs alongside fields and the banks of the Onyar to Resclosa d’en Borra, passing the recreational area by the Onyar. Its landscape and named destination give this walk its distinct character. The Camino del Onyar covers a different scale: the route is about 19 kilometres long and passes through Mediterranean forests, farmland on the plain and riparian woodland along the Onyar. In terms of distance, the Camino is considerably longer than the 5 km Volta al Volcà; the routes also have different landscape and geological themes.
Planning Your Trip and Stay
