Vall-Llobrega lies at the foot of the Massís de les Gavarres and offers several access points to this natural area. The town’s history spans traces of Roman settlements through to churches and houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. You can plan your stay around two specific themes: archaeological and architectural history, and landscapes and trails.

Archaeological traces and an ancient settlement

The earliest traces of human settlement in Vall-Llobrega are at Els Vilars and date from Roman times. Vilarenys offers a different archaeological trace: the site contains the remains of a Roman villa dating to the 1st century, which was inhabited until the 6th century. Ovens, graves and wall remains have also been discovered. The two sites therefore offer different ways to explore the Roman past: Els Vilars is associated with the earliest traces of settlement, while Vilarenys features the remains of an inhabited villa and other finds.

The Església vella de Sant Mateu takes the story further back in time. This Romanesque building probably dates from the 10th or 11th century. The original settlement of Vall-Llobrega once stood nearby. Here, architecture and local history come together in one place.

Churches and historic buildings

The Església de Sant Mateu in Raval de Baix dates from the 17th century. It has a single-nave floor plan, two side chapels and a polygonal apse. This makes it possible to distinguish the nave, side chapels and polygonal end as clearly defined parts of the building. Two approvals mark separate stages: building permission was granted on 30 January 1669, followed by permission to consecrate the new church on 21 January 1671. A simple 17th-century baptismal font adds a specific detail to the building’s interior.

The historic streetscape of Raval de Baix also includes houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. They stand in a row along one side of the road. The view of Raval de Baix thus ranges from a single church building to a row of houses arranged along the road.

A local landmark

The Eucaliptol de la Plaça de la Vila is more than 100 years old and is considered one of the square’s distinctive landmarks. It was planted by children from the former school in the municipality of Vall-Llobrega. Its history can therefore be understood not only through its age, but also through who planted it. If you want to explore local history beyond its buildings, it adds a detail from the history of the former school to the churches and archaeological sites.

Landscapes and routes

Vall-Llobrega lies at the foot of the Massís de les Gavarres and has several access points to this natural area. The Descobrint Montagut route passes the Dolmen de Montagut and leads to one of the peaks of the Massís, Montagut; it also offers views of Palamós. The route thus combines an archaeological landmark with a landscape destination and viewpoints.

Two other routes feature different points of reference. Route 10 from Vall-Llobrega starts at the car park opposite the town hall. Route 22 is marked with signposts and white and green painted markers for the local SL trail. For Route 10, the starting point is specified; for Route 22, the type of trail marking is given. This lets you choose between the routes based on the kind of information that is useful for your planning.
