Canet D'adri combines a forested volcanic landscape with buildings whose history spans from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages. Gorges, wooded heights, churches and a megalithic burial monument offer different ways to discover the area and its history.

Volcanic Landscape and Wooded Heights

Parc de la Font de la Torre lies beside the deep volcanic gorges of the Riera de Canet. Rocky overhangs, small waterfalls and pools are part of this landscape. Forests of holm oaks, cork oaks, oaks and pines cover 83 percent of the municipality. Forest and geological formations thus shape the landscape together.

The highest points also differ significantly: at 985 metres, Puigsou is the highest point in the municipality. Puig d’Adri is a wooded volcanic cone, 408 metres high, rising above the surrounding estates, fields, farmhouses and woodland.

Churches and Traces of the Past

The history of the parish church of Biert dates back to the 10th century. It was rebuilt in the early 11th century and again in the 12th century. The parish church of Montcal was mentioned in 1057; the present building is originally a 12th-century Romanesque structure that was later extended. These dates mark different stages: an early mention, rebuilds and the construction of a building that was later extended.

Sant Vicenç de Canet was mentioned as early as 822. The church is a basilica with three naves ending in three semicircular apses. At Sant Llorenç d’Adri, the Romanesque façades are fully preserved and integrated into the present building. The Romanesque west portal has three stepped archivolts; on either side are a base, a column and a capital.

The Dolmen de la Mota offers another glimpse into the past. The megalithic burial monument was built in the Late Neolithic, between 2500 and 2200 BC, and used as a burial site throughout the Bronze Age until the 8th century BC. The dating therefore distinguishes the time of construction from the monument’s long period of use. The dolmen’s history reaches far back before the later church references, offering a glimpse into prehistoric burial practices.

Restaurants and Festa Remença

Canet d’Adri has numerous restaurants serving homemade cuisine. As opening hours may vary from one establishment to another, check the hours of the restaurant you plan to visit.

The annual Festa Remença alternates between the villages of Vall de Llémena. The programme includes traditional dances, talks on history, a theatrical performance and medieval gastronomy. The host village and dates vary from year to year; if you want to include the festival in your travel plans, check the latest details in advance.
