Llampaies is not a compact place with a single focal point in the town center: the settlement consists of scattered hamlets with farmhouses. This layout is important for finding your way around; Llampaies does not have a single, unified village center. Historic architecture and routes offer different ways to explore on a trip where culture and landscape both play a part.

Gently rolling terrain, cultivated fields, and small pine woods shape the landscape. This rural perspective complements the history of the settlement, with its farmhouses, neighborhoods, and the church of Sant MartĂ. You can therefore view Llampaies from two perspectives: its architecture offers tangible building forms and historical dates, while the terrain, fields, and pine woods define its landscape character.

Neighborhoods and architectural history

The Església neighborhood is the oldest in Llampaies. Puig is a group of farmhouses, some dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Masos lies 200 m west of Puig. Its houses date from before the end of the 18th century; most were built in the 19th century. The spatial relationship between Masos and Puig and the houses’ architectural history can therefore be considered separately: the distance shows where the neighborhoods lie in relation to one another, while the dates provide a timeframe for their buildings.

Sant MartĂ and the archaeological heritage

The church of Sant Martí de Llampaies is a single-nave Romanesque III building with a semicircular apse. The bell tower is rectangular, with a level of round-arched openings and a pyramidal capital. These features distinguish the church building, the apse, and the tower as individual architectural elements. The fortification is also part of the building’s history: when it was built, the Romanesque wall was raised, as were the church’s other walls.

On the north side of the church is an anthropomorphic tomb carved into the rock. It suggests the presence of an early medieval necropolis nearby. The tomb belongs to the Olèrdola type; Catalan anthropomorphic tombs of this type are dated to the 9th and 10th centuries. Two aspects can be distinguished here: the possible archaeological connection to a nearby necropolis and the dating of Catalan tombs of this type.

Routes with different reference points

A gravel route from Sant Pere Pescador along the FluviĂ  and Ter rivers passes through Llampaies. Route 149 offers a different reference point: it reaches Llampaies at kilometer 9.24. There you will find the Itinerannia sign AE 279 and a GR shortcut toward Camallera. The descriptions therefore emphasize different things: the gravel route is described as passing through Llampaies, while Route 149 has a specific point with a trail marker and shortcut.

The route description for Route 149 is dated November 8, 2024; signage and trail conditions may change. Check both before setting out if you plan to follow this route.
