Terrassa brings together different periods of architectural and cultural history with a connection to the landscape. Casa Alegre de Sagrera and the forms of Masia Freixa draw attention to architecture; Torre del Palau and La Seu d’Ègara represent older historical layers. The MNACTEC adds the history of textile production to this perspective. When planning your trip, you can decide whether architecture, archaeological evidence, industrial history or the landscape should be the main focus.

Architecture: decorative details and distinctive forms

Casa Alegre de Sagrera is a bourgeois residence from the early 20th century. Its style is eclectic and inspired by Modernisme. Its modernist features include woodwork and wrought ironwork, mosaics, stained-glass windows, wall paintings and sculpted reliefs. The description thus encompasses different kinds of decorative work—from worked wood and metal to glass, painting and sculptural ornament.

Masia Freixa makes a different architectural impression: it features curved forms, parabolic arches and distinctive white vaults. Compared with the variety of materials at Casa Alegre, the description here is shaped above all by curves, arches and vaults. Visitors interested in architecture can thus focus on different design features without reducing both buildings to the same style.

Medieval routes and earlier remains

At Torre del Palau, its historical function is closely tied to a crossroads: the tower was built in the 12th century to control the junction connecting Barcelona with the Catalan hinterland. It is the only surviving remnant of Castell Palau. The tower can therefore be understood both through its role in the medieval transport network and its significance as the remaining part of the castle complex.

La Seu d’Ègara was founded in the mid-5th century; the complex also preserves Iberian and Roman remains. At the visitor centre, audiovisual material accompanies a tour through fifteen centuries of history. Its founding date, archaeological traces and interpretation of history represent different aspects of its cultural heritage. Castell Cartoixa de Vallparadís houses the Museu de Terrassa’s temporary exhibition hall as well as a permanent exhibition. As the temporary exhibition programme may change, it is a good idea to check the latest visitor information before planning a specific visit.

Industrial history at the MNACTEC

At the MNACTEC, the museum venue and industrial history are closely connected: it is housed in Vapor Aymerich, Amat i Jover, a former textile factory designed by Lluís Muncunill and built between 1907 and 1908. The exhibition “La fàbrica tèxtil” presents the wool production process through the rooms and industrial machinery of the former factory. This lets you distinguish the history of the factory building from the subject of the exhibition: the building was a textile factory, while the exhibition focuses on the stages of wool production.

Landscape and planning

The Anella Verda crosses the entire municipality of Terrassa and features a peaceful landscape with a rural character. It can be reached by public transport, bicycle or on foot. This offers a different focus from the city’s architectural and cultural history. You can consider whether to include the landscape in your trip plans and which of the listed ways of getting there suits your itinerary.
