Talamanca’s small historic centre is characterised by cobbled streets. Its elevated location offers views in every direction, while its position on the edge of Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac makes the landscape another highlight. Architectural history, memorial sites and trails offer different perspectives on the town.

Castle and the history of the battle

Castell de Talamanca was built in the 10th century and contributed to the founding of the town. Philip V had the castle as it then stood demolished; the present building dates from the 18th century. During the Battle of Talamanca, the castle served as a command post for the Catalan army and played a significant part in its victory. The battle took place on 13 and 14 August 1714 during the War of the Spanish Succession and was the Catalan army’s last victory over Bourbon troops. Talamanca was first documented in 960.

A monument at the Memorial 1714 commemorates the Catalan army led by Marquès del Poal. The site by the castle also has a viewpoint with panoramic views over the battlefield. The Centre d'Interpretació de la Batalla de Talamanca displays remains discovered during excavations at the battlefield; audiovisual and interactive materials include a 3D reconstruction and an educational panel.

Churches and the historic centre

The first inhabited part of Talamanca lay between the castle and Església de Santa Maria. The Romanesque church was built in the 12th century and expanded in the 18th century. It contains the Gothic sarcophagus of Berenguer de Talamanca, commissioned by his wife Blanca in 1325. The building phases and tomb bring together different chapters of the town’s history in one place.

Ermita de Santa Magdalena also adds to the picture of the town’s historic buildings: the late Romanesque hermitage was built in the first half of the 13th century. It underwent extensive restoration, including renovation of the building and improvements to its surroundings and access.

Circular route and landscape

The elevated location and position on the edge of Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac give the landscape a distinct place in your travel plans. The circular Ruta circular per la riera de Talamanca SL-C 58 is signposted with white and green markings. Tour information for La Riera de Talamanca includes a map, elevation profile, duration and difficulty level. These details help you assess the hike’s time requirements and level of challenge before deciding how to fit it into your stay.

Another landscape feature lies above Balma dels Gubians: a large, accessible rock surface leads towards SĂnia de Can Valls. The Balma is in a wooded, rocky area of Serra de la Mussarra. It should not be confused with Torrent dels Gubians, which was an important site in the Battle of Talamanca.

Wine-growing history and getting there

Tina de Ca la Jana is a wine vat from the period when wine-growing flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its opening at street level is covered by a glass platform. The first Barraques de Vinya del Pla de Santa CecĂlia also tells a story of wine-growing: the rectangular structure dates from 1798 and has an unusual barrel vault. Together, the two structures show that local wine-growing history can be explored not only through wine, but also through historic structures.

Talamanca can be reached via the BV-1221, which connects Terrassa with Navarcles. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, first decide what to focus on when planning your trip: a stay centred on the castle, church and the history of the battle calls for a different allocation of time than a plan that also includes the marked circular route. The tour information provides the duration and difficulty level to help you plan this hike.
