Els Prats de Rei offers several historical themes to explore during a stay: Roman finds, a medieval town centre and memorial sites from two periods of war. Visitors wishing to focus on culture can explore these different layers of history. At the same time, plateaus, the valley of the young Anoia River and wooded areas shape the municipality’s landscape.

Roman traces and the medieval town centre

The atrium of the parish church of Santa Maria contains five Roman tombstones dating from the 1st to the 3rd century AD. Their dates offer a tangible insight into the area’s early history. The historic centre preserves the layout of the town that was once enclosed by walls: narrow medieval streets and notable buildings define the area. Roman remains and the medieval urban layout thus highlight different periods.

Historic sites and routes

Another historic landmark is the Torre de la Manresana. In late 1711, during the Battle of Prats de Rei against Bourbon forces, it served as an observation post for the Habsburg army; the battle took place in the context of the War of the Spanish Succession. The visitor arrangements allow free access to the exterior; advance booking is required to visit the interior and upper section. Check the current visiting conditions before your visit.

The Ruta de la Batalla dels Prats de Rei covers the main historic sites of the 1711 battle. It can be explored on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or by quad bike. Another focus is the Ruta dels Espais de Memòria de l'Hospital Militar de Campanya de l'XI. republikanischen Armeekorps. This town-centre walking route takes in the sites of the field hospital during the Spanish Civil War and explains a local historical event from 1938 and 1939. The two routes draw attention to different periods of war and historical questions.

Festivals and Roman traditions

The Sopar Romà is an annual dinner whose menu and staging recreate the Roman era. The Pessebre Vivent has been performed in Els Prats de Rei since 1972. The Festa Major takes place from 13 to 16 August; 15 August is its main day. Numerous festive and cultural events are held during the festival in the historic centre, especially in Plaça Major. If you are travelling for the Festa Major, check the event dates in advance.

Landscape and getting there

Els Prats de Rei lies on the Segarra plateaus in the Anoia comarca, in a small valley formed by the young Anoia River. About 40 percent of the municipality is wooded. Aleppo pine and black pine predominate, alongside smaller stands of oaks, kermes oaks and holm oaks. For travel planning, historic exploration and a landscape of valley, plateau and woodland offer distinct options.

A regular bus service serves Els Prats de Rei on the Barcelona–Igualada–Calaf route. Check the operator and timetable before travelling.
