Discover Santa Eugènia De Berga through several distinct themes: Romanesque architecture, traces of local history and trails through the landscape. The Romanesque church is also the starting point of the PR C-93. The Ruta urbana pel municipi leads past houses, a portal from a former monastery and terracotta plaques. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on architecture, craft traditions, nature or historic sites.
Romanesque Church and Local History
The Església romànica de Santa Eugènia de Berga is documented from 917. It was rebuilt around 1050 and consecrated again in 1173. In 1931, during the Second Republic, it was designated a Bé d'Interès Nacional (BCIN). These three historical dates mark different stages: its early documentation, rebuilding and reconsecration; the designation came many centuries later.
The building can also be described in terms of its parts: a vaulted, single-nave church opens onto the transept through three apses. An octagonal drum rises above the crossing and supports a three-storey bell tower. The nave, transept and tower form a clearly articulated structure, offering specific details beyond its general classification as a Romanesque church.
Details Along the Ruta urbana pel municipi
The Ruta urbana pel municipi starts at Plaça Nova, by the parish church and opposite the former town hall. The entrance portal of the former town hall comes from the courtyard of a Dominican nunnery that no longer exists. It therefore points to a monastic site that has disappeared, though the portal still reveals the origins of its stonework.
The route continues past houses dating from the mid-18th century. Can Segimon has a door and a window with stone lintels and surrounds. At Cal Cisteller, the original stone surrounds and an 18th-century lintel have been preserved. In Carrer del Call, you can see two terracotta plaques documenting a long local tradition of working with clay. The plaque at Can Cantarell bears the date 1793, the letters IHS and the inscription “Joan Cardona ma fecit”. The plaque at Can Godayol is of the same type and also dates from 1793.
Woodland, Panoramas and Hiking Trails
The Sala-d'Heures area includes an oak woodland typical of the Plana de Vic, with downy oak and boxwood (Buxus sempervirens). On the plain, Sala-d'Heures preserves one of the few remaining examples of this oak-and-boxwood ecosystem. The Font del Paradís is in the woodland: built between 1925 and 1935, it is a stone fountain with a rectangular body and a semicircular upper section. Puigsacost ridge offers a different view of the landscape, with a sweeping panorama over the northern part of the Plana de Vic.
The PR C-93 starts at the Romanesque church, passes the Font Rodona and crosses the Santa Eugènia stream over a footbridge. It reaches the plain of Sala d'Heures beside the reservoir and crosses its dam. The reservoir collects water from the Vilalleons stream, which was channelled to the Sala d'Heures estate. A different historical perspective is offered by the 9 km hiking route to the former Vilatorta airfield from the Spanish Civil War. It runs through the municipal areas of Sant Julià de Vilatorta, Calldetenes and Santa Eugènia de Berga. Along the route are shelters and other aviation-related facilities, including a powder magazine and a hangar. The routes differ mainly in their themes: the PR C-93 passes by a watercourse and reservoir, while the airfield route brings historic sites into focus.
Miniature Railways at Màgic Món del tren
Màgic Món del tren is devoted to collecting, model making and the world of miniature railways. The museum is housed in a modern building adapted for all visitors, with 1,000 square metres of space across three floors. Its floor area and three levels give a sense of scale to this cultural attraction: the focus here is on collections, model making and miniature railways, while the local route explores historic buildings and traces of traditional crafts.
