Explore El Pont de Vilomara through two themes: buildings from different periods and the rural heritage of winegrowing. Santa Magdalena del Pla, Santa Maria de Matadars and the Pont Gòtic o Pont Vell offer different historical perspectives; in the Vall del Flequer, the wine vats add another dimension to the cultural and landscape heritage. When looking for a hotel, it helps to first decide what you would like to focus on: architectural history, walking routes or an event related to wine.
Churches, bridge and museum
Santa Magdalena del Pla is a Romanesque church first mentioned in documents in 1077. Santa Maria de Matadars preserves significant remains of pre-Romanesque Catalan architecture and has remained free of later alterations; it is designated a Cultural Asset of National Interest. A fenced park surrounds Santa Maria. The Pont Gòtic o Pont Vell originated in Roman times as a stone bridge built on the site of an earlier wooden bridge. The Museu de Rocafort adds a documented museum history to these older buildings: it opened on 15 August 1986 and was substantially expanded in 1996. Here, you will encounter different historical points of reference, from a documentary mention to the development of a museum.
Wine vats and the history of winegrowing
The dry-stone wine vats are scattered across the northwestern slope of Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac and its surrounding area. Thirteen groups of wine vats in Talamanca, Mura and el Pont de Vilomara i Rocafort are designated BCIN, or Cultural Assets of National Interest; most are located in the natural park. This means that the protection extends beyond a single group and covers sites in several municipalities.
L'Escudelleta in the Vall del Flequer consists of eleven wine vats, seven shelters and a wine press. The eleven vats refer to this specific group, while the thirteen designated groups describe a broader regional context. The wine vats of the Vall del Flequer are considered a valuable part of the rural heritage and an exceptional legacy from the period of the wine boom in Bages. The combination of wine vats, shelters and a wine press helps make the history of winegrowing understandable not just through a single structure, but as an ensemble.
Trails, events and getting there
The SL-C 52 Les tines de la vall del Flequer route runs mostly along forest tracks and paths; dry-stone walls, winegrowing facilities and the natural surroundings shape the route. Guided walks are organised on weekends from the Centre d'InformaciĂł de Rocafort to discover Castell de Rocafort. Check the schedule for these walks before travelling.
The Festa Major may also be important when planning your dates: it takes place on the weekend closest to the feast day of Saint Magdalene, usually the third weekend in July. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the current event dates. From 1 January to 31 December 2026, the Les tines amb tast de vins de la DO Pla de Bages route includes a tasting of two wines from DO Pla de Bages and a light snack of regional products. Check the current booking details before taking part.
For travel, Sagalés line 782 connects Manresa, el Pont de Vilomara and Sant Vicenç de Castellet. Timetables and service conditions may change; check the timetable before your trip.
