Pujalt’s old town is a walled village that grew around its castle. Remains of the castle survive at the village’s highest point. The Portal de Baix provides another tangible link to the historic layout of the village: it lies between Cal Franquesa and the Gothic Capella de la Concepció. Near the castle ruins stands the Romanesque Capella de Sant Ponç. In Pujalt, you’ll encounter different historic sites: the castle as the origin of the walled village, a surviving gate between two buildings, and a Romanesque chapel near the ruins.

Churches and Works of Art in Pujalt

The parish church of Sant Andreu de Pujalt has medieval origins and is located outside the former walled area. Its location therefore differs from that of the historic village centre. The village’s works of art also feature different materials and depictions: the Retaule de la Puríssima Concepció is a gilded, polychrome wooden altarpiece. The Gothic Mare de Déu de la Puríssima Concepció is a polychrome marble depiction of the Virgin Mary with the child in her arms, holding a book.

A local tradition is also associated with this depiction. According to the story, the Mare de Déu de la Concepció was found around the year 1600 in a rosebush in the scree field of Coma d'en Roig. The story has been passed down as an oral tradition. It offers a different way into Pujalt’s cultural heritage than its buildings: the focus here is the story surrounding a single religious work of art.

The Memorial and Pujalt’s History

The Memorial de l'Exèrcit Popular offers another historical perspective. A trail through the forest passes through the museum installations of the former training camp of the XVIII Army Corps of the Republican People’s Army in Pujalt. The training base of this army corps was established in Pujalt in the spring of 1938. The visit thus combines a walk through the forest with the camp’s structures and the history of the former camp.

A guided tour is scheduled for 11 a.m. on the last Sunday of each month, with no advance booking required. Check before your visit whether this schedule is still in effect.

Stargazing at the Parc Astronòmic de Pujalt

The Parc Astronòmic de Pujalt is located at an altitude of 750 metres. Its clear, dark skies, far from the light pollution of large cities, shape its astronomy programme. A night-time visit includes an introduction to the Observatori de Pujalt and its facilities, an immersive 360° planetarium, and observing the sky with the naked eye and through a 51 cm aperture TGS telescope. The planetarium and telescope offer different experiences: the immersive presentation is followed by direct observation of the sky.

Advance reservations are required for public visits to the Observatori de Pujalt; places are limited. Check availability before travelling. If you’re choosing between the history trail and the astronomy programme, the main difference is the format: a forest walk and former camp facilities on one hand, and night-time stargazing and a planetarium on the other.

The Ruta dels 5 pobles by Bike

The Ruta dels 5 pobles is a mountain biking or e-bike route through the landscapes of Alta Anoia. The route passes through La Guàrdia Pilosa, Conill, Pujalt, l'Astor and Vilamajor. Pujalt is therefore one of five villages along the route. Unlike visits to individual buildings, the bike tour takes in several places. For planning, this offers a clear alternative: you can focus on Pujalt’s village history, art and astronomy, or consider a mountain biking or e-bike route through five villages. The route description does not specify a duration or difficulty level.
