More than 30 springs rise at various points in Monistrol de Calders; below the town, three streams join to form the Calders River. The mountainous area is shaped by streams and ridges. Pine forests, holm oak forests and scrubland cover three quarters of the municipality. These themes of water and landscape shape both the nature destinations and some of the local trails.

Springs, Streams and Rock Formations

Els Gorgs Blaus reveals another side of this waterscape: the gorge was formed as the Riera de la Golarda carved its way through a band of bluish conglomerate rock. The landscape includes a cliff about 40 metres high and pools where the current swirls. Gorg de Saladic lies east of Monistrol de Calders. Here, the Riera de Sant Joan crosses large rock slabs.

Parc Municipal El Serrat also offers a view of the surroundings: from there, you can see Monistrol de Calders and the Riera de Sant Joan. Those interested in viewpoints will find another at Pla de TrullĂ s, with panoramic views of La Mola, the Pyrenees and the Vall de MarfĂ . The trail there starts from Granera or from the area around the Masia del SolĂ  housing development. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.

Local History in Buildings and Inscriptions

The church of Sant Feliu brings together two different dates: it has been documented since 1105, while the present building largely dates from the 18th century. The small Capella de Sant Pere MĂ rtir also dates from the 18th century and is listed in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. It stands on a ridge and offers views of Monistrol de Calders and the Pla de Bages plain.

Door lintels provide particularly tangible evidence of the area’s building history. The Cal Marfà estate has five inscribed or engraved examples. One of them bears the oldest inscription in the town centre, dated 1615. Tools carved into door lintels indicate the trades of former residents. The lintel at Ca l'Estudiant shows the tools of a master stonemason.

Other historical traces belong to a different era and take different forms. Codro Bressol is a large boulder that broke away from the upper cliff. An anthropomorphic tomb from the early Middle Ages is carved into the rock. Pla de TrullĂ s is also home to a Bronze Age megalith with a simple chamber, dating from around 2000 to 1500 BC. It was restored in 2005.

Trails and Different Ways to Explore

The GR-177 long-distance trail passes through Monistrol de Calders and leads to Pla de TrullĂ s, where visitors can see the dolmen and viewpoint. The entire trail is 109 kilometres long and starts in MoiĂ . This total length refers to the long-distance trail, not to a single loop around the town. The municipality also provides a map of eight walking routes that pass most of the notable places in the municipal area. Check with the municipality before your trip to see whether the map is available.

For a walk around the town, the Ruta de la Font de l'Estiraguers, Font del Collet i Parc del Serrat is a separate option: this peaceful local walk passes the meander below the town, the Font de Ca l'Estiraguers and the Font del Collet, and also runs through Parc del Serrat. The Ruta de la Pedra Seca offers a cultural perspective on the landscape. It introduces the millennia-old dry-stone building technique, in which stones are laid without mortar or other binding material, creating architecture that blends into its surroundings.

The final section of the trail to Capella de Sant Pere Màrtir is still well paved. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out. This helps you plan visits to the various destinations—from a walk around town to viewpoints and cultural heritage sites—with the right information for each outing.

Guided Activities in the 2026 Programme

The Sant Llorenç Park programme has guided activities scheduled in Monistrol de Calders for 2026, on the first and third Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participation is free and available with advance registration. The first Saturday features the cultural walk “Les escultures de Monistrol ens parlen”. The event on the third Saturday is called “Aigua i natura de Monistrol de Calders” and explores the cultural heritage associated with the use of water, as well as biodiversity.

If you plan to attend one of these events, check the specific dates and registration details in advance. This helps distinguish between the regularly scheduled programme activities and your own plans. With springs, rock formations, buildings and guided walks, Monistrol de Calders offers a range of things to explore, without requiring every experience to be combined into a single route.
