Moia can be explored through two very different historical perspectives: the archaeological finds and caves of the Coves del Toll, and the story of Rafael Casanova. For your planning, you can choose from a guided cave visit, museums, a marked route, and other landscape or leisure activities.
Coves del Toll: caves and prehistory
The Coves del Toll are a geological formation that has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Remains of hearths and some flint tools attributed to the Mousterian period attest to the presence of Neanderthals in the Middle Paleolithic, between 100,000 and 40,000 years ago, in the Moianès region. The Quaternary fauna also gives the caves special significance: the Cova del Toll is one of the European caves with particularly rich Quaternary fauna.
You can visit the inside of the Coves del Toll only with a guide. You can reserve tickets in advance or buy them on the day, subject to availability in a group. Check the visiting arrangements before your trip. The Parc Prehistòric de les Coves del Toll complements the prehistoric theme with replicas of four different Neolithic huts.
Route and landscape
Another option is the “De Moià a les Coves del Toll” route: it is 6.5 kilometres long and rated easy. Check the latest route information before setting out, as details may change. For a cave visit, guided tours and available places in a group are key; the route’s length and rating provide an initial guide when planning your outing.
Puig Rodó in Moià is also highlighted in regional hiking and cycling routes as a worthwhile destination. You can explore this connection with the landscape on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The Mirador de la Creu in Moia is noted for its spectacular views and offers another landscape-focused highlight.
Casanova’s story and the museums
The Casa Museu Rafael Casanova in Moia is a 16th-century house. Rafael Casanova was born there around 1660; today, the house hosts an exhibition about the War of the Spanish Succession. This gives the name Casanova a specific historical location and links it to a later conflict.
Founded in 1935, the Museu Municipal de Moià is located on Plaça Major in the Casanova family’s ancestral home, Rafael Casanova’s birthplace. The Museu Arqueològic i Paleontològic de Moià focuses on archaeology and palaeontology: it displays finds from the Toll caves and dolmens in the Moianès, arranged in four thematic sections.
