Sant Marti De Tous offers a range of reasons to visit: a castle documented in writing as far back as 960, a rich heritage of dry-stone structures, and the La Fou waterfall. There are also recurring festivals and the Caminada Popular, which usually covers about 10 kilometres. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first whether nature, architectural history or a particular event date should be the main focus.

La Fou and the landscape

La Fou is a waterfall of geomorphological, hydrological and palaeontological interest. These terms refer to different aspects of natural history: landforms, water and fossils. The area around La Fou has numerous rock overhangs and caves, including the Cova del Diable. The waterfall and neighbouring rock formations therefore offer a different focus from the town’s buildings and historical landmarks.

To visit L'engorjat de la Fou, you can leave your vehicle in the village and follow the signposted, paved path from there to the Mare de Déu de Sentfores.

Castle, church and architecture

Castell de Tous has been documented since 960 and can be considered a late-medieval Gothic-style castle. Renovations in the 14th century gave it largely its present-day appearance. A crenellated keep is among its described architectural features. The dates point to different aspects of the castle: 960 marks the documentary record, while the 14th century marks its transformation.

The local heritage also includes numerous dry-stone structures: huts, walls, cisterns, wells and ditches. Water channels, a well and the remains of ovens add to this variety. Carrer de les Voltes has two covered sections, formed by round arches and buildings erected later. The street is protected as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest (BCIL).

The parish church of Sant MartĂ de Tous was built in 1892 over the earlier Gothic church. The surviving elements from the earlier church include a window with two openings and multi-lobed pointed arches, and the bell tower staircase. Other historical dates highlight different aspects: Santa Maria de la Roqueta de Fiol is documented in 1079; the Santuari de Sentfores is home to a Romanesque carved figure from the 12th century.

The Centre Moral was inaugurated on 11 November 1910. At the time, the ground floor housed a food cooperative and the first floor a café-theatre. This means the town’s history includes not only its castle and churches, but also the former community and cultural functions of a building.

Festivals, walk and audio guide

The Caminada Popular takes place every year on the second Sunday in May and usually covers about 10 kilometres along roads and paths. The Festa Major de Tous falls on the second weekend of November, around Saint Martin’s name day on 11 November. The Ball de Faixes is performed every year during the Festa Major and at other special events. The Aplec de Sentfores takes place on Easter Monday and includes Sardana dancing and skittles. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these occasions, check the latest dates and programmes in advance.

The dates offer different starting points for choosing when to travel: the Caminada takes place in May, the Festa Major in November, while the Aplec is tied to Easter Monday. You can therefore make a walking event, a festival weekend or an occasion around the moveable date of Easter the starting point for your plans.

Tous és Llegenda also offers an audio-guided tour that you can use on a mobile device without booking in advance. It provides another way to explore Sant Marti De Tous’s cultural themes, without having to plan your stay around an event date.
