Santa Coloma De Cervelló can be planned around two clear interests: the Modernist heritage of Colònia Güell and the trails through the surrounding landscape. For a short stay, a simple priority helps: should the focus be on Gaudí’s partly built church and the former industrial settlement, or on hiking loops and viewpoints? Festivals and market dates offer additional guidance when choosing when to travel.
Colònia Güell: Architecture and Industrial History
Colònia Güell was established in 1890, when Eusebi Güell moved the El Vapor Vell cotton textile factory from the Sants district to the Can Soler de la Torre estate in Santa Coloma de Cervelló. The complex includes a former textile factory, workers’ housing, and buildings in the late 19th-century Modernist style. It has been protected as a historical heritage site of cultural interest since 1991.
The Gaudí Crypt is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Works of Antoni Gaudí.” Only the entrance porch and the lower nave of the planned church were built. Its structural features include catenary arches and hyperbolic paraboloid surfaces, found in the walls and vaults as well as in the ribs of the entrance porch. Visits to the Modernist complex and church are organized by the Centre d'Interpretació i Acollida de la Colònia Güell.
The industrial history adds another distinctive dimension. The site was powered by steam from the outset; the nearby Llobregat was never used for hydroelectric power. A stay therefore offers a chance to explore two different aspects of Colònia Güell: its architecture and the history of textile production.
Routes, Summits, and Landscape
Route 3 is an easy, 2.2 km walking loop. It passes through the Cripta Antoni Gaudí, the Modernist residential complex, and the industrial area of Colònia Güell. For a longer loop, try the Sender del Parc dels Cirerers: it is 5 km long, has 120 m of elevation gain, and takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. It is also easy and suitable for hiking and mountain biking. The two route lengths help with planning, while the approximate duration for the Sender dels Cirerers provides an additional time estimate.
The Sender de la Font de l'Artiga i la Roca Dreta leads to Montpedrós, at 350 m, the highest summit in the municipality. From there, the route offers views over the lower Llobregat Valley and the Garraf-Ordal massif. Another type of landscape is the alluvial plain formed by the Llobregat, which is part of the Parc Agrari del Baix Llobregat. Torre Salbana stands near the rectory on a rocky outcrop, overlooking much of Baix Llobregat.
Festivals and Dates Throughout the Year
The Aplec de Sant Antoni takes place every year on the last weekend of April at the Ermita de Sant Antoni. The Festa de la Cirera is celebrated every year in Santa Coloma de Cervelló on the last weekend of May, around cherry season. In mid-October, Colònia Güell hosts the recurring Festa del Modernisme: residents wear historical clothing and recreate the atmosphere and events of the colony’s early years in the 20th century. Check the dates for your travel year if you’d like to plan your stay around one of these festivals.
The Mercat de Pagès “km 0” is held every Saturday in Colònia Güell. As the market information was updated in March 2026, it is advisable to check the current market day before travelling.
