A large part of L'espunyola is covered by forest: pine, holm oak and oak woods shape the landscape. At the same time, the area's history spans from the first specific documentary mention of Castell de l'Espunyola in 950 to buildings with details preserved from later centuries. Visitors planning a stay can therefore focus on two different aspects: the wooded surroundings and the history of its architecture.
Forest and protected landscape
Part of L'espunyola lies within the Natura 2000 site and Site of Community Importance ES5130029 Serres de Queralt i Els Tossals-Aigua d'Ora. The forest types and this protected-area designation provide a specific context for the landscape. L'espunyola can thus be characterized not only by its historic buildings, but also by its forests and protected nature.
Castell de l'Espunyola
The first specific documentary mention of Castell de l'Espunyola dates from 950. The castle is an architectural complex comprising several buildings and two towers. The main tower at the southern end served as a residence and is dated to around the 13th century. The surviving structures also include part of the surrounding wall, the large portal on the east side and the remains of the former church of Sant Climent del Castell. The complex therefore brings together various historic building elements, not just a single tower.
For directions: from kilometer 139 of the C-26, an asphalt road runs for a little over three kilometers to the castle. This route information does not indicate whether it is currently open. If you are planning a visit, check access in advance.
Chapels, churches and other traces
The Capella de la Marededéu del Bosc is located near kilometer 132.5 of the C-26, right beside the road. It is a small, rectangular chapel with a single nave and no apse; the year 1861 is carved into its monolithic door lintel. The megalithic tomb Bressol de la Mare de Déu del Bosc lies about 25 meters north of the chapel, on the road from Berga to Cardona. The approximate distance and direction help distinguish these two named landmarks from one another.
Església Sant Sadurnà del Cint has been documented since the 10th century. Its side and west walls date from the earlier building phase, while the apse and side chapels were added later. Parròquia Santa Margarida del Mercadal, or del Cint, may date from the 12th century; it follows a simple model commonly found in the region. Sant Salvador de Mata preserves another trace: despite alterations and complete deterioration, part of its opus-spicatum flooring remains. Sant Climent de l'Espunyola also houses a polychrome wooden sculpture of Saints Cosmas and Damian from the former church of Sants Metges.
Routes and different trail connections
The main route of the Ruta ramadera is 32 kilometers long and divided into three sections: l'Espunyola–AviĂ , Avià –Olvan and Olvan–SagĂ s. The route can be done on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. For planning purposes, both the total distance and the named sections and possible ways of getting around are relevant. The CamĂ de l'Espunyola a la Vall d'Ora (ICR10) follows a different route: it passes through the El Cint area and near Sant SadurnĂ. When comparing the routes, you can use the Ruta ramadera's length and sequence of sections as a guide, and the CamĂ's named areas and local references.
